Why are drinks and popcorn so expensive at the theaters? I've read they are actually a front for the Mafia, especially in Chicago.
>>
>>63578662
it is where they make their money.
neither costs that much to make and they put an incredible mark up on it. used to work at a movie theater, employees got free drinks and popcorn you just had to bring your own cups
>>
>>63578662
They make very little money from selling tickets. Almost all the revenue is in concessions.
>>
>>63578662
If you want to find fronts look for places that only take cash, like cinema Guzzo in the greater Montreal area
>>
they are both expensive and shit quality
>>
>>63578662
>Why are drinks and popcorn so expensive at the theaters?

Because they can be.
>>
>Sir... did you want mustard on your crab legs or not...?
>>
i always smuggle my own shit in to be honest

last time i paid for food at a cinema i was 12 years old and drunk as fuck
>>
>>63578662

I would never work a minimum wage job where you have to wear a fucking tie.
>>
I mean the bird cages have live animals in them...
>>
>>63578662
The ticket money goes to the studio and the concession stand keeps the theater open
>>
>inb4 OP's image triggers the /pol/ racists

It's funny that you idiots bring up /pol/ more often than /pol/ actually shows up
>>
>>63578662
All the theatres around where I live now don't check bags. The ones around where I grew up didn't even allow them.

I have brought chinese food, burgers and fries, pizza, beer, liquor, subs. I'm seriously considering smuggling in some crab legs just so I can actually say I have.

You haven't seen expensive trash food before you've seen cruise ship food.

DUDE WEED LMAO
>>
>>63579028

the point was

i was 12 years old AND literally out of my mind

thats the fucking point

actually buying and paying the mark up on cinema food is fucking retarded

as are you

wasnt some statement about how getting drunk at the age of 12 makes you 'cool'

you must be literally 12 yourself
>>
>>63579028

you dumb fuck it was a statement about how fucking retarded you have to be to actually pay the mark up on that garbage

popcorn isnt even good

you must be literally 12 yourself
>>
In England there is literally no policy against bringing your own food, I just went to the cinema today holding a bag of crisps and water and no one gave a shit.
>>
>>63578978
>don't check bags
>bags
Why would you bring a bag in the first place?
>>
>>63578662
Careful sir, the bucket's hot.
>>
>>63578937

That's... that's not true at all
>>
>>63579526
Like a backpack. Or in a womyn's case a large purse or handbag. I live in Hawaii it's not unusual at all to see people at any age carrying one everywhere because you can walk wherever and not have to keep shit in your car.
>>
>>63579594
>go to cinema
>order medium bucket of crab legs, hot
>grab it with both hands
>burn my hands on the sides, hotter than expected
>cinema doctors are summoned
>miss half of the film
>have to see the rest of it with bandaged hands
>>
>>63579677
What do you keep in your backpack?
Cellphone and wallet can you keep in your pockets.

The worst part there is the spread of disease. People on cruise ships are constantly ill and shitting diarrhea buckets.

That's what they don't tell you in the ads. Cruises are disgusting as fuck.

Okay lads it's time for some basic GCSE economics. Price is determined by demand, amongst other things but here we only need demand, and demand is determined by a lot of factors but in this scenario the important ones are choice and necessity. In a cinema there is no competition between popcorn companies, you only have one choice, that is to say they have monopoly power to set the price rather than take it and in a cinema buying popcorn is, essentially, a necessity. It's practically criminal not to buy it, which means there is very inelastic demand (you will buy the product no matter what the price is), this gives them the freedom to make it expensive. This is just common sense people, I am disappointed there exists people so stupid to not know this.

I never buy concessions, and never will. all you have to do is refuse to buy their overpriced crap and they will lower prices.
>>
>>63580505
Okay, but 90% of the people who walk in want to buy popcorn.
>>
>>63578877

>>
>>63580206
crisp should only be used for description
that's like saying ripes as a classification of something that is ripe
fries are called fries because you fry them
>>
>>63580505

>all you have to do is refuse to buy their overpriced crap and they will lower prices

That's a cute idea, but people will not refuse to buy their overpriced crap, social conformity is very important to people.

Seriously? You put up with people searching your person for fucking sweets in the so-called land of the free?
>>
Ticket money doesn't make the theater much money. You're actually helping the theater more if you buy their concessions and then sneak into multiple pictures rather than the other way around.

Each week the movie has been released, the theater gets a larger percentage of the revenue generated from it.

Something like this:

Week 1: 90% studio 10% theater
Week 2: 80% studio 20% theater
Week 3: 70% studio 30% theater

So movies that have a long steady run, are also better for theaters than the ones that have a huge opening weekend and then fizzle out.
>>
>>63580779
well, i don't go to the movie theater that much, so I don't know how it works in my area but rules vary from theater to theater.
>so-called land of the free?
kinda answered your own question there m8, I am more worried about nsa spying than bag checks at a business that I hardly ever use.
>>
>>63580779
They can't search you but if you're obvious about it or have a tote bag or something they don't have to let you in with it.

If it's cold out and you have some candy or a soda in a heavy coat they're not gonna make you turn out your pockets. Most of these minium wagers don't get paid enough to give two shits anyway as long as you're discreet about it.
>>
>>63581024
>Most of these minium wagers don't get paid enough to give two shits anyway as long as you're discreet about it.
this, also don't make a mess of course a lot of concessions buyers are enormous slobs also
>>
>>63581024
But the fact remains they can legally search you - a pack of minimum-wage mouth-breathers? They can actually lay hands on you and rummage through your bag? If they tried that shit anywhere else they'd get stomped into the ground like a tent-peg.
>>
>>63581158
*can be enormous slobs also

didn't mean to imply that certain types of movie patrons are messy

Fuck off with your libfag bullshit. Maybe I'm older than the median age here but I was going to the movies way before James Holmes and before 9/11 and Columbine and theaters did this.

It's about the fucking money. And if they say it's for your own safety they're trying to put people at ease, so they'll spend money.
