If we're completely and totally honest: Sopranos > Goodfellas,

If we're completely and totally honest:

Sopranos > Goodfellas, Godfather, Casino
The Wire > Scarface, Serpico ...
Fargo Season 2 > Fargo movie
True Detective 1 > Se7en
etc. etc.

So what's the point of movies in 2015?
No bait, serious question.

The point being: if you have 10 hours to create something, it's bound to be better and deeper than if you try to compress everything into 90 minutes. There's literally no reason for movies since TV shows have reached movie quality.
>>
You can watch tv for narrative complexity but I watch film for medium-specific reasons.

few things, television is more business than movie so it will always be watered down and catering to the masses
>Sopranos > Goodfellas, Godfather, Casino
while you may believe this, cinematically sopranos doesn't have anything on godfather's lighting or goodfellas' editing, the latter are true cinematic artworks and the former is a narrative told using film

it will also always be cheaper and drawn out far beyond what it needs to be because of execs who need X number of episodes and X number of seasons. in fact, most stories told in a tv series could be done better in 2/3 hours.

serial tv loses the wholeness of the experience. you are not surrendering yourself to one piece for the length of its run, you are waiting sometimes months in between episodes and it is scattered over time. the effect is something closer to reading a long novel than something traditionally cinematic and immediate and visceral

plus, with all your opinions in the op,
find me a tv show you consider a better 8½, or a better l'avventura, a better 2001, a better days of heaven

its a silly thing for me to propose obviously. firstly, they don't aim for those kind of niches or high artistic ideals in tv, but secondly, they simply could not capture them in the tv serial format.

television really isn't fit for refined art in any way. it's not good film, and it's not long form narrative being told in its most effective medium (literature) not to mention, it is almost entirely narrative, which much of the modern arts have tended to leave behind for more abstract and personal experiences

GOT is better than all of those tbqh

As much as I prefer TV shows over movies nowadays, it has to be said that even good TV shows run the risk of pumping out more seasons even when the creative well has run dry, thereby forever tainting the series as a hole.
Movies on the other hand are more self-contained, and bad sequels can be more easily ignored.

>Goodfellas
>a cinematic artwork
Is this a joke?

>Sopranos > Goodfellas, Godfather, Casino
no
>The Wire > Scarface, Serpico ...
maybe
>Fargo Season 2 > Fargo movie
thats a true one
>True Detective 1 > Se7en
lol no. one's end was magnificient, and the other's was ridiculous (green ears, retarded villain)

Holy fucking shit apply yourselves.

Longer doesn't mean deeper, but quite the contrary actually.

FACT: ANYTHING THAT REQUIRES YOU TO WATCH COMMERCIALS IS GARBAGE.

Netflix>Hbo>amazon>Hulu in order of quality content.

Goodfellas editing is way overrated, otherwise I agree with you.
>>
>>63578696
Yes I agree, one episode of Sopranos has more depth than the entirety of Goodfellas or The Godfather for example.
>>

Well, all those TV shows you mentioned were made after and heavily influenced by all the films you mentioned.

I do generally agree with you. TV has really come of age recently and that is down to changing audience tastes and the way that we consume. More money is being put into TV and long form plots allowed to play out rather than being limited to episodic narratives as was once the case.

But cinema is far from dead.
