Jim is god but who knows. he can do pretty much whatever he likes with the story, sometimes that can be a problem in itself. with Avatar he was constrained by having to introduce everything and it was all heading towards a final battle sequence. I just don't know. I wasn't thrilled to hear that he was writing Quarritch back in somehow but maybe it could work. he's being honest that he's rewriting the script a lot which you can view as good or bad. at least he didn't write it in 3 weeks.

This old saw drives me crazy because it's another way of saying why isn't there as much Avatar merchandise as other huge movies have? Even the people who are right about the quality of the movie don't grasp that not being a big toy franchise movie was why I loved it. It's one of the few major action movies that was ostensibly for adults but doesn't feel like it was designed with its own happy meal toys in mind. Why should I view the movie as a failure if I don't see it saturated everywhere for the rest of my life like I do with Star Wars and superheroes? No movie makes that amount of money because audiences will it to, they are advertised and distributed to maximize revenue, generally so that even more money is made back on merchandise. Avatar was just big filmmaking for its own sake.
Paradoxically Avatar gets more shit for this because it made the most money of any movie ever in ticket gross. But because it isn't a super-duper toy power like The Avengers, we have laypeople sitting around and criticizing it for not selling enough Avatar-related things. It would be silly to make the same complaint of Mission: Impossible. And in another contradiction, talking a lot about how little people talk about Avatar even though we know full well everyone went to see it and will probably see the sequels too.
It may be the last Hollywood movie that successfully sold spectacle for its own sake on that level. Even The Hobbit took Lord of the Rings in the merchandise-friendly direction.
Not all of us treat watching movies as a pop culture consumer experience, so just because the entertainment complex tells you that's the only kind of movie viewer that exists, doesn't mean you have to believe them. I realize that Avatar's success was due to it being a pre-sold event as well, but I always end up defending it because I appreciated it too - it's a better-made movie than most movies of that type have been since.
