Do you think it is at all relevant that TDKR began with a plane sequence?
Think about it:
>bats fly
>planes fly
>film begins with plane sequence
>film ends with plane sequence
I think the plane sequence indicates that Bane's intentions go beyond merely making good on Razal Guel's plan to destroy Gotham. By taking on a flying object, I think it's made clear that Bane's motives extend even to the point of Batman and his legacy.
