I'd argue that Dr. Crusher is a worse character. Troi is still useless, but at least she had some characterization with her mother and her relationship with Riker. Crusher was such a bland and flat character. Hell, even her son had a better arc than her.

Inner Light is a terrible episode but I don't have the time or energy to retype what I said two days ago about why it is shit. In short its emotionally manipulative but completely misses the mark on how to make the story emotional. Poor characters, poor execution and a huge missed opportunity due to the TNG writers proving yet again that they can't write compelling drama. Compare the emotional impact that The Visitor had and its not even in the same league.

The problem with this scene is we never really see how the experience affects Picard, we're just told it by other characters.

We don't see Picard runaway from his wife. We don't see his relationship with his best friend. We don't see him settling down and then his daughter being in the same position he was. We don't see him try to convince his daughter not to run away. Everything we see is after those emotional, formative moments. Picard's best friend dies off screen. There is a timeskip where Picard is now OK with living his new life. Picard's daughter, whom we know absolutely nothing about, is now supposed to be the emotional anchor of the story.

There are a lot of ways to make Inner Light a good story. They just bungled the execution horribly. Why does Picard care about the flute and why should we, the audience, care? We saw his son for just a few minutes. We never saw Picard love his son, care for him, struggle with him. He just shows up, says I wanna play the flute, then fucks off. Its all hamfisted shit that gets hammered into you rather than explored as the episode goes by. They should have just cut the son completely, focused more on how the wife, best friend and daughter become important to Picard, and then given the flute to the grandson to better illustrate the idea of unrealized potential.

Thinking about how poorly executed Inner Light is gives me a headache.

That was the point. The emotional impact came from seeing the passage of time in a macro scale and the ephemerality of it all, in a sort of Hamlet-graveyard-scene kind of fatalism. It wasn't supposed to make you connect to his family.

ok I get what you're going for
nevertheless, isn't a lot of 'tell, don't show' in this episode due to time constraints? how are you going to show his life in a single episode? how do you propose to show all those formative moments without it turning into a clip show, which would miss the emotional impact even more?

Imagine it's got all the restrictions of a stage play. Limited sets, limited cast, limited budget. The point isn't to show all these things to you, it's to show the usually stoic captain's reaction to these things. They're better off not showing it and informing you of the consequences to let you fill in the blanks.

TOS is. Essential "watch during the winter while having a warm drink"-core
TNG qualifies too.

VOY is okay too.

They'd probably just culturally assimilate it like they did with Shakespeare. So it would be A'labama Torres who would be super christian, and Tom would be ultimate fedora, backed up by seven and holodoc.

I used to work as a theater in 2001 and would stand next to a very dark and small game room that had this Voyager game inside of it. I'd stand hour after hour looking over at it while the movies were playing.

The game had a little room with a seat inside. They player could go into the game and close a black curtain while playing the game for privacy.

I didn't know much about Star Trek than so I never to gave the game much thought and never play it.
I could almost feel the Seven of nine side panel calling to me as I stood in front of it for 5 hours straight sometimes. If only I knew than what I know now I would have found a way to take the panel home with me some how or at the very least played the game once.

I (not that anon) just skimmed through the episode transcript. The problem in your argument is that they never 'fixed' the problems with transwarp, as:

I"m just telling you what it says in the episode. Relevant bits:

>JANEWAY: How did you get back to Voyager?
>PARIS: I saw that you were looking for me, so I took the new engines offline and ended up back where I started.

>JANEWAY: It would appear that the theory of infinite velocity is correct. It may be possible to occupy every point in the universe simultaneously.
>TORRES: Then it's just a matter of navigation. If we could figure out how to come out of transwarp at a specific point, this could get us home.

As for curing things, it's no east venture:
>EMH [on monitor]: We destroy all of the new DNA in his body. His cells will have to use the original coding as a blueprint. But the only way to destroy the mutant DNA is with highly focused antiproton radiation.
>TORRES: Antiprotons? The only place on this ship which generates antiprotons is the warp core.
>EMH [on monitor]: Exactly. I'd like to place Mister Paris in an isotopic restraint and then infuse it with controlled antiproton bursts. A tricky venture, but I see no other alternative.
>TORRES: We'll have to take the warp core offline

There's still the second trip, when he navigates perfectly to a planet that can support his lizardman children. He clearly figured out how to navigate to where he wants to go.

And if it's too risky to transwarp the entire ship home, why not transwarp just one person home? Their friends/family would get to know that Voyager survived, and Starfleet engineers could get to work on improving the transwarp drive.
