How does a warship the size of Manhattan get soloed and keked by a single seat fighter no bigger than a modern day fighter jet? Is this a bad design or just more shitty writing by G Luc

Well, there are some serious design flaws among their mega ships.
>>
>>63515618
It's actually twice as big as Manhattan. Old EU did a boo-boo and thought that it was five miles long, whereas the actual model used was 11 times the scale length of a regular one-mile Star Destroyer, making it 11 miles (17,7 km) long. The latter has been the canonical length of a Super Star Destroyer for most of the 2000's, after Lucasfilm retconned the older material.

The same way a battlestation the size of a moon gets destroyed by one nuclear bomb. THink about it: Would detonating a nuke on our moon do anything to it? Nope, not in the least.

The only good thing about those movies were the vehicles and the weapons. The rest of the franchise is full retard.
>>

If you detonated it in the main power generator of the moon it'd probably take out earth too.
>>
>>63516175
It would take out the generator, if the generator is damaged it's not generating any power any more, you know, power which it would need to explode.
>>
>>63516205
Just like blowing up a normal real world generator wouldn't take out the gasoline tank that's attached to it.

....
>>
>>63515618

Easy.

The ENTIRE rebel fleet mercilessly pounded the shit out of it until its shields buckled.

A few snubfighters took out the bridge deflector shields, and took out the command center by ramming the fucking thing.

The ship was going down, it was just a coup de gracie.

The proton torpedo didn't blow up the main reactor. It set off a chain reaction that led to the main reactor exploding - the fact it went into a 'thermal exhaust port' might explain why.

No, they don't explode if something goes wrong. A meltdown is just a big fucking radioactive mess.

But your fantasy whatever-the-fuck reactor core that powers a laser powerful enough to totally destroy a planet, outright...I feel can probably catastrophically explode when you shoot it with a missile.

But I learned that from the cross-section books, which are the best star wars media apart from the original trilogy.

A generator generates energy, a chain reaction needs to be maintained to generate energy, if you stop the chain reaction (fision or fusion doesnt matter) the energy generation stops, no boom.

The pilot was on the bridge, as he died he fell forward onto the controls thus commanding the ship to nosedive. The people in the secondary bridge at the center of the ship in a highly shielded location were in fact rebal spies and kept the ship from recovering. The rest of the crew either didn't know what was happening or was helpless to reroute things in time.

>>
>>63516560
Ah you misunderstand, it was a chain reaction of events that led to the Death Star exploding, not a chain reaction that powered the generator. The proton torpedo went into a thermal exhaust port, which blew up some kind of heat exchanger, which meant something overheated which etc etc until the whole thing blows up. That's the chain reaction the rebel leader is talking about. The generator was apparently a hypermatter reactor by the way, whatever that is.

Exotic particles need to be constantly created to have a stable pool of them, if you damage the reactor you take away the energy the exotic particle producing thing needs.

So nope.

Mybe the proton torpedo was in truth a 500 ton anti-matter bomb.

They didn't even know there was a weakness there. The rebels had to carefully pore over the death star plans to find even that single weak point, and then during the trench run the Imperials even work out what they're going for, but Tarkin won't evacuate because he thinks they've already won.

Also it's never said exactly what the thermal exhaust port is venting thermal exhaust from. All we know is that when whatever it is stops having its thermal exhaust vented, bad things happen.

Do you know for sure that's how a hypermatter reactor works? Because it's not explained in the film. Either way, they don't blow up the reactor, they blow up some kind of heat exchanger and from there some chain of events leads to the reactor generating too much power and exploding. I mean, take away the control rods in a nuclear reactor and see how that goes. Is it that hard to believe some similar process is happening here?

I mean, in the context of the prequel trilogy alone Sith Lords sort of are their speciality. Nobody had fought a Sith for 1000 or something stupid like that until Obiwan and Quigon fought Maul, who Obiwan killed and Quigon died from. Then in Clones Obiwan and Anakin survived an encounter with Dooku, who Yoda also fought and didn't outright defeat. And that's it as far as people fighting Sith up to that point.

They're more specialists in it than any of the other jedi running around who wouldn't have any live lightsaber/force combat experience

The Death Star stores the energy produced by the hypermatter reactor in massive internal solid state hypercapacitors that when damaged by the proton torpedo caused an electrical discharge of such intensity as to spontaneously ionize the surrounding matter and generate nuclear fusion. Keep in mind that the Death Star has to hold enough energy in its power banks to explode a planet at a significant fraction of the speed of light, and it was on its way to do just that to Yavin.

Also the second Death Star was actually IG-88, that random robot assassin in Empire.

On American war ships there are redundancies out the ass. If the bridge get's taken out control goes to CIC. If CIC get's taken out the ship can still be controlled from aft steering.

The only advantage of it being that big is intimidation. It'd be way more practical to just make a ton of regular star destroyers which can group up and split off into different fleets instead of being stuck in one area at a time. Not to mention it's significantly easier to sabotage one giant ship than to sabotage hundreds of seperate smaller ones.
It's a textbook case of putting all their eggs in one basket but you could argue that within the logic of Star Wars this basket of eggs is SO scary and intimidating that any force that would be tempted to resist a regular imperial fleet would shit themselves and surrender at the sight of the Executor or Death Star.

>Sinking
>In Space

Okay, so here's the thing Anon.
You know how bullshit writers have no idea how orbits or Space in general works, and think that blowing out the engine on a spaceship in orbit somehow makes the ship accelerate retrograde and begin instantly falling down towards the surface?
I'm guessing you saw a lot of movies like that. And Star Wars kind of fits the bill, so I understand your confusion, thinking this is that.
However, what this actually is, is more the Super Star Destroyer getting its navigational systems blown out, and before the backup controls could be used to fix things, the ship drifts off into the wrong direction, thinking it got that message from the bridge, while really the bridge just exploded.
Unlucky for them, in that direction was the Death Star.

Does this cast light on the situation?

There is no sinking in space. Not even in Star Wars. Well probably somewhere in the EU, but considering that they literally have a shiny B-Wing-ish thing in there that can R.K.O. solar systems... Yeah no. Doesn't count.
>>
>>63515951
fanstasitc
>>
>>63515618

originally it was supposedly the gravitational pull of the death star that sucked it to its doom

this was from writers that dont know how space, gravity, and physics work

some other writer tried explaining it basically that the executor was having navigation issues for the battle after the rebels started attacking it, this was probably a nod to how kuat drive yards makes fundamentally defective products left and right.

anyways, after
>concentrate all your firepower on that super star destroyer
the navigation was going haywire, and the command tower was fighting to keep the ship in check. then when the a-wing rammed it the bridge basically the ship flew out of control and careened into the death star before the backup bridge could reroute all the commands
>>

>Why does the ship need to be so big?

Before things get too nerdy lets all remember that Star Wars is bullshit space fantasy and has more in common with WH40k than it does with anything resembling science.

So the idea behind a Super Star Destroyer is that it is so large and so well armed that it's protected by the simple fact that you need an entire fleet of smaller ships to even chew up its armor and all the while it is probably outgunning your fleet 3:1. It's also configured to essentially be a floating city in space, it has enough fighters, landing craft, walkers, and whole garrisons of troops inside of it to suppress an entire star system by itself and works as a mobile Imperial stronghold.

As far as the design Star Wars takes a ton of inspiration from WWI / WWII and in those wars large capital ships were valued by 1. How many guns they could carry, 2. how large of guns they could mount, and 3. How much armor they could have in order to take hits and keep on fighting. This was measured by weight as the heavier a ship was the more armor it had, the more guns it likely had, and the heavier the guns it carried. A 30,000t battleship was outclassed in every way by a 50,000t battleship, which was outclassed in every way by a 70,000t battleship. Ruling out blind dumb luck there is no way that a smaller battleship could defeat a larger one as the larger battleship's armor could just absorb the hits, the larger guns could hit further and blast through it's thinner armor, and it had far more guns which meant it could sink the other ship faster through more guaranteed hits.

This is the general theory that Star Wars capital ships are built around. Obviously star fighters throw a wrench in that whole system, as they did in WWII where battleships were horribly outmatched by aircraft carriers, etc...

Did these books have a series name? Not specifically for Star Wars but the author/publisher of the book

I had a book on the Solar System when I was a kid that had the same sort of layout, type of text and signature red margin border

It's basically like if 9-11 had happened in space

larger ship means larger reactor, more armor, more guns
larger reactor means it can power more guns, have more powerful shields

its in space so there's nothing like wind/water resistance to slow you down, hyperdrive speeds work independent of mass it seems, and its size just means it needs more engines to accelerate, which it has

though even in the EU the ship was said to be essentially a show of force and totally impractical, as almost every role the executor filled, a regular star destroyer could do at a fraction of the cost and logistics

you don't use the executor as a normal capital ship, you use it at the tip of a massive campaign, both as a ship of the line and as a propaganda tool. while you could achieve the same result with a normal star destroyers, you use the executor as your biggest gun in a normal fleet, and you use it in conjunction with them to take out nigh impregnable systems.

>oh hey, the vong just tossed a world ship with support vessels at this sector of space
>well shit, we need to take it back, send in a few fleets with an SSD at the helm, should knock it right out of the sky

this is what the new republic did a number of times against the Vong, with the Lusyanka being the second most famous SSD, the other being the Executor
