Congratulations on identifying (and misunderstanding) the appeal of Star Wars.

The main appeal comes from the setting which feels grand and intricate without explaining every single thing. Items look used, clothes look worn, locations look like someone actually uses and lives in them.

In that particular scene we see that Han has a life beyond what happens in the movie. He has some unexplained problems with the criminal underworld, some personal issues that he doesn't have to explain in minute detail in expository monologue and so on..

Even Ben's throwaway lines about the clone wars, the role of Darth Vader, lines about the senate being dissolved... it all serves to broaden the universe beyond what we see in the movie.

Too bad then EU took a massive shit on everything.
