At one point Carpenter said yes his belief was that Childs was infected then the DH The Thing comics came out that were a direct sequel to the Carpenter movie where Childs wasn't infected at first but only later with more run ins with the Thing was he infected and Carpenter actually liked em enough to say he considered them canon sequel to his movie.

In the same fucking moment camera is showing that main building where Childs is not standing in the door and then camera stop for a moment showing door where power generator is. So Doc-Thing infected Childs and go to power generator.

Macready and others notice that Childs run from main building. He later in last scene said that he was running afer Doc. What realy happend is that infected Childs run to hide somewhere to give Thing bigger chance to survive.

Second after that scene someone broke power generator. If a fuckin Childs was chasing infected Doc who broke generator. Only 5 fucking people was living in that part of the movie so there was no one in the building. Whats really happend that infected doc fucked up power gen.
