ITT: actors who have proved themselves to actually be talented but act in shit

I Love You Phillip Morris is the most underrated movie of all time
ROSE BYRNE.
>>63454867
What's bottom left?
>>63454972
lolwat
he's decent in that movie but Sarsgaard acts circles around him
Miles Teller. He's been in exactly two good movies (Whiplash and pic related) but even in trash like divergent, he acts circles around the rest of the cast.
>>63455008
good call
his performance in Spectacular Now in particular is great
>>63455006
I'm just saying that compared to his horrendous acting in the prequels, he does a very good job in Shattered Glass. Got Stephen Glass' mannerisms and speech patterns down perfectly.
Will Ferrel's a great actor, he's just constantly in shitty movies.
>>63455008
I've heard of this, but avoided it because it sounds like a typical teen movie. I take it it's actually good?
>>63455064
it's rather great, one of the best of its genre I'd say. the filmmaking is top-notch and it's actually a pretty quiet, contemplative look at teenage alcoholism and youthful love
>>63455003
Man on the Moon
>>63455057
yes, I thought he was great in stranger than fiction
>>63455057
ugh I can't believe they botched one of the best stories ever written so badly
>>63455408
I love this movie but it's hardly his best display of acting ability, only his likeability and charisma
Adaptation is the one I would cite
>>63455003
Man on the Moon, the Andy Kaufman biopic
Nic Cage.
Guy should get his debt and spending habits under control so he can stop starring in utter garbage.
>>63455543
What about Leaving Las Vegas?
>Ray Liotta
>Harvey Keitel
>>63455772
That one is great too but I really think that Adaptation is his best display. In LLV he is subdued when he needs to be but you still get the impression that you're watching a Nicolas Cage movie that just happens to be good, if that makes any sense. In Adaptation it seems like he really takes on something different than usual.

>horrnedous acting in the prequels
To be fair, everyone seemed like they had no acting talent in the prequels
That's because George Lucas is a shitty director and also because the actors were often just surrounded by literally nothing but green screens
He's won an Oscar and still has the "working-class keep something for a rainy day"
work ethic.
Tom Cruise should stay away from big action blockbusters and go back to something more dramatic

Like the classic, Interview with the Vampire.
I've seen I Love You Philip Morris twice, it's great.
Ewan is such a qt
This will always be the king. A single movie. One goddamn movie where he tried and he absolutely knocked it out of the park. Then he goes back to do his retard shtick.
>>63455008
Rabbit Hole was alright.
His performance in Fantastic Four was abysmal, but so was everyone else, and that entire movie was full of good actors. Toby Kebel especially, that motherfucker has chops, but was just so bad.
>>63455064
actually bretty gud anon, it's at least worth checking out
>>63454867
>implying all Jim Carrey movies aren't GOAT

>Lord of War co-star Ethan Hawke said of Cage: "He's the only actor since Marlon Brando that's actually done anything new with the art of acting; he's successfully taken us away from an obsession with naturalism into a kind of presentation style of acting that I imagine was popular with the old troubadours." While stating that Cage had hurt his career by working on too many poor projects ("he's put a little too much water in his beer"), Hawke added: "If I could erase his bottom half bad movies, and only keep his top half movies, he would blow everyone else out of the water."
He has given too many fantastic performances in too many fantastic films to qualify for this thread.
>>63457953
I dont get why he'd do this. Why would he show us this glimmer of talent and then take it all away as quickly as he showed it?
>>63458077
His friends have bills to pay
>>63457953
>>63458154
meant to be for

PTA liked The Waterboy and Happy Gilmore.
Sandler liked Magnolia and Boogie Nights
They met on the set of Little Nicky and became good friends, and PTA wrote
PDL for Sandler
>>63457953
I'm still convinced that he's going to have a Bill Murray-style career resurrection. He's young enough that there's still hope.
>>63458354
I really hope so, it would be incredible. Would go down in history as one of the most impressive career switches in Hollywood.
I've spoken about this with a friend, and we think that a Wes Anderson film with him might be interesting.
