How do avant-garde directors, the types who make the seriously obscure shit, make a living?
Talking about the likes of Courant, Brakhage, Hutton, Benning, Jarman...

a lot of these people come from humble backgrounds
>>
They're financed by art institutions that make millions through visitors and donations.
>>
They work at McDonald's
>>
In europe they get film funding. Also they become professors at art and film school.

Most of these avant guarde movies are ridiculously cheap
>>
Donations and crowd funding
And rich Jew family
And using your family to make everything instead of hiring new people
That's how Jodorowsky does it
>>
>>63444358
the question is not how do they get funding for the film, but how do they make a living off of them
>>
>>63444394
jodorowsky isn't avant-garde, certainly not the type the OP implies
>>
They mostly have other jobs and have their films funded by museums and film institutions.

>>63444423
They don't really. They may be given money to pay the bills in producing their next film, but it's certainly not a career like other filmmaking is.

Peter Greenaway, though he eventually moved away from avant garde, started out as a Gov. film editor and found much of his inspiration through the mundanity of editing TV documentaries and the like.
