I'll tell you what went wrong: that fucking koala. Around the same time, they nerfed the fuck out of Stan and he went from competent but misguided agent to loser guy who loses literally every fight/argument, even more of a loser than Peter Griffin.
From that point on, the show's quality dropped significantly Still miles better than Family Guy at its prime.

The Simpsons really isn't comparable to American Dad. It was always very character driven, whereas one of AD's peak episodes is where Stan has to survive a christmas related apocalypse to save his family from the Antichrist. Stan being a competent FBI agent really doesn't matter
