Most germans vastly overestimate their ability to communicate in english. They knew a handful of english terms and apply german sentence structure and grammar to them.

This is why I think people like Adam Sandler and Kevin James still get work. Whoever thought of doing that with the Bavarian accents was very smart and most countries where Airplane was translated no one took the effort to make the joke come through.
Taking a movie like Airplane or A Fish Called Wanda with all its clever dialogue and translating it into dozens of languages must be a nightmare. If you have a movie where all the "jokes" are someone falling down or getting kicked in the nuts is way easier to send around the world. Just do a literal translation and nothing is lost at all.
