I was a kid at the time and had seen the originals years ago and only saw the other prequels when they came out. I barely remembered who Palpatine was since he was only in the boring talky scenes.

The prequels were never designed to be watched first. You have to have seen IV - VI in order for a lot of the shit in I - III to make any sense at all. The plot was written backwards, the characters were written backwards, same with the design, technology, and fuck even the locations.
The films were designed with the expectation that you knew who darth vader was, you knew who the emperor was, you knew what storm troopers were, who boba fett is, and had heard about the clone wars. I mean FFS yoda literally says in Ep. II "begun, the clone wars have" after the first battle. It's like some political leader in 1914 saying "And so begins THE FIRST WORLD WAR" It's all there for the benefit of the audience to go "hey hey remember this? remember what so and so said this?
