It is playing on more screens than Jurassic world and most seats were already sold out in November. The international market will bring hundreds of millions more i nit's first week.
TV rights and other secondary markets like streaming services have also already been sold (stars has the 2016 rights in America, and Netflix has force awakens for Canada).
Most important of all is the merchandise. Waves of merchandise have also already sold out, restocked, and sold out again. They hit their first $1 billion in merchandise sales the weekend the toys went on sale. Disney is estimating about $5 billion in merchandise in it's first year.

It may have lost it's impact now, but in the 1970s the cantina scene in starwars was a massive cultural phenomenon. It blew peoples fucking minds and caused almost as much media buzz as the lightsabers and X-wings did. If you read film reviews from the 1970s much of the buzz involved the diverse cast of aliens and the music they played.
Younger star wars fans were often not aware of just how much of a pop culture phenomenon the band was. When people under 30 hear the words "star wars music" they think of the imperial march or the main theme. When older people think of it that cantina song starts playing in their head.
tl;dr
Star wars always had diversity, but it was genuine. Blue people and red people and walrus face and the "He doesn't like you!" guy. It was not "proud strong woman who don't need no man!"
