You know, I think my opinion of the last episode was completely colored and overwritten by the fact that for one blessed time in all the years the finale was not some way-overblown, universe-is-ending--if-you-don't-blow-my-nose kind of story with artificial drama flowing out its ears the whole time.
I felt pretty good about the episode after I watched it, but objectively when I look back at it the time lords were terrible (as they always have been since first they actually stepped in from offscreen) and it avoided really answering the questions it raised. But my subjective sense says, who really cares about all that anyway? I didn't watch to know by what plot contrivance Gallifrey came back. It felt like that's what a Doctor Who finale should be, and let the questions be answered by the regular episodes in the future, gradually.
The other way just feels out of character for the series. It's not that kind of story.

Personally I liked it, but as I understand it, it could have been a lot better than it was in regards to Gallifrey finally coming back for real after 10 years of it being gone. The episode did not live up to the hype and focused too much on Clara, who honestly should have stayed dead after Face the Raven. The Doctor kicking out Rassilon with basically no resistance made Rassilon look like a little bitch. At least half of the soldiers should have stayed on his side out of fear, but none of them gave a shit. There was also no real closure as to what the status of Gallifrey is now. It it going to stay in that spot of the Universe forever? Will the Time Lords make more appearances now? Who nose.
The Hybrid remaining a mystery was also a mistake. Now there's just more speculation as to what or who it is. The Doctor being half human might as well be canon at this point, even though it was previously thought the Doctor just liked hanging around Earth because he was fascinated with humans and they reminded him of the Time Lords.
The episode also undermines what happened in Face the Raven so that Clara's death isn't as impactful as it was before. Her death was supposed to be the result of her trying to be like the Doctor, this was even expressed directly by the Doctor in Heaven Sent. It was supposed to be a consequence for her actions, but it ultimately means nothing now that she is essentially immortal with her own Tardis now.

One thing has been bugging me about Heaven Sent.
Shouldn't the skull in the teleporter room be reset out of existence? The Doctor starts each loop by walking out of the room without looking around first, only returning way later after noticing that any changes get undone. If it was in any other room, like the clothes thing, i'd happily overlook this, but since the teleporter room resetting is such a huge key to the plot working...
