Why is this show so based? and why aren't there more shows like this that are actually good?

too pollitically incorrect and not enough female reivindication.
also the main arc is the friendship between too men and that is not edgy enough for modern audiences, the protagonist has to be a vampire or a tortured sorcerer or something.

To be honest they picked up the most interesting moment in Roman history. Some writers may equal the excitement but the shit we had had like Game of Plebs isn't going to turn out sublime no matter how good the director and production value.

Also best choices in girls and camera angles.
Not to forget the newsman.
>>
Because it accurately depicts the culture of the time without getting politically correct or shying away from the nastier parts of roman and ancient society. It was great how you'd continue to root for pullo, atia etc even after they had done horrible things like kill a slave out of rage or order her daughter's lover to be murdered
>>

Yes. Rome's first season cost $120 million to make, Game of Thrones' first season cost about $60 million

Rome was co-financed by the BBC and after they pulled out, HBO decided the show wasn't worth it and canceled it. The show was by no means a ratings failure for HBO, just not enough of a success to justify the extravagant budget. Game of thrones' budget has increased over the years but they're pretty much the biggest show on TV right now so HBO is more willing to cough up the cash.

>>

It's not a bad show but it feels extremely amateur and almost soulless once you've been reasonably invested in The Borgias.
One feels like a historical show primarily meant to entertain and the other feels like a history programme primarily meant to educate.
But that's my opinion, evidently some people prefer Borgia.

The Borgias is one of the comfiest shows ever, but Borgia is more historically accurate.
>>
>>63393580
>>63393608
The Borgias is a big budget american show. It is much nicer to look at it but it's not as historically accurate for better or worse. They also glamorous the period much more, while Borgia is really gritty and at times hard to watch as a result. There's more titties but also more violence and torture and such.

It's basically pleb vs patrician

Are you shitting me?

Augustus was fucking terrible militarily, which is why he had guys like Agrippa there to fight his battles and manage his armies. Fiscally, he was alright. It was kind of hard to fuck up an empire that stood more or less uncontested for ownership of the Mediterranean and most of Europe, but he at least avoided that.

But politically? Politically, Augustus was a god. He played people like Minnesota Fats did billiards. He almost never made a wrong political move and when he did, he came out on top every single fucking time anyway. And he was not a likeable guy. Caesar was a likeable guy. Augustus was a creepy fucker. But he still pulled off some amazing shit. That whole line about finding Rome brick and leaving it marble? Shit was dead on. If it hadn't been for him, the Medieval period would have kicked off a fee centuries early.
>>
>>63394572
He married her for her family's political clout though. The historical Augustus also fucked the wives of every senator, so I dont think he cared.
>>
>>63394572

You saw her body, right? The girl might have been a goddamned two-bagger who could eat corn through a picket fence, but she was built like a brick shithouse.

In reality, Livia was at least as smart as Augustus and they made an amazing political team.

>>63394525

Augustus probably would be labeled as a very high functioning Aspie today. Read Suetonius. Even the people who liked him thought he was an odd fucker. And he really was socially very uncomfortable. But he knew how to anticipate literally every move his political enemies were going to make even before they did. And that, plus a metric fuckton of money, is pretty much a recipe for success.

> fucked the wives of every senator

There's a modern theory on this (kindasorta built on contemporary Roman texts) that this was a very carefully constructed political ruse.

Augustus lived in a time and culture were men were expected to be licentious, fuckhappy bastards. And when he was younger, he had a reputation for not being that kind of guy. He didn't ride, couldn't fight and was waaay too cerebral for most of Roman society to really respect. He was, well, a fucking Aspie weirdo who had not a manly bone in his sickly little body. And people, especially the plebians, noticed that shit. So suddenly, the guy who was essentially seen as an asexual geek has these rumors floating around about him fucking the wives of politicians who were possibly aligning against him.

Now, that's pretty rude for Patrician society, but the Plebs probably ate that shit up. And being a rumor, it both kekolded his enemies and was perfectly deniable. And it made him look manlier to the plebs.

Wheels within wheels, baby.

I was very hit and miss with this show at the start. I only watched it because /twg/ wouldn't stop going on about it. First few episodes were a bit odd, some jarring cuts and it felt poorly put together and edited. Had moments but just kept going.

By the end of the show I was loving it and really enjoying myself, and Pullo and Vorenus.

I reckon that if you're not pushing yourself to watch it and not trying to enjoy it, then the way it is probably works against it. Maybe the reason why it was cut because it just can't compete with stuff like Game of Thrones on the sheer scale of it.

You missed the point.

Being with Atia had virtually no political upside. She was mother of his greatest potential rival. She was also beyond childbearing age. So marrying her would have stuck him in a serious strategic hole. Divorcing her would have been seen as a slight against Octavian and would be used as political ammunition against him while at the same time issuing no heirs and little if any claim on the future Julian dynasty should Octavian die or get killed. Now, he did (irl and in the show) marry Octavia, but at least that produced heirs.

On the other hand, marrying Cleopatra gave Antony power over Egypt, which was the primary source of grain for Rome. It also gave him at shit ton of money. It would be like a modern ruler marrying a woman who owned the entire middle east. And even contemporary accounts said Cleopatra was kind of ugly but very, very charming. She was a seriously smart lady and was incredibly good at bedding powerful men.

If he hadn't been going up against Octavian and wasn't a drunken beast, Antony could have at least split the empire, if not slowly taken it outright. He just had the misfortune of running up against a political genius and being kind of an idiot.

Pompey could have surrendered at any time and would almost certainly have been allowed to live by Caesar. If not resume his post as consul. Killing Pompey would have been a political disaster on Caesar's part and leaving him alive but in exile would have been inviting his allies to raise an army against him. So Pompey knew that if he just went back to Caesar, it would have been as if the entire war had not even happened.

But Pompey legitimately believed that his duty as consul demanded that he fight Caesar as long as Caesar still held power illegally. So when he says "What now?" he was asking himself how he could get back into the fight with most of his allies having deserted him and his army dead.

Considering that you can trace familial facial structures over generations by analyzing that family's official statues and death masks, yeah... they're either accurate or somebody was digging up mummies to copy their funeral masks generations down the road.

Also, look at the coins minted during Cleopatra's reign. Bitch was ugly.

He could have pulled the plug on the entire war and gone right back to his life in Rome. Instead, Pompey keeps fighting even when it was obvious to everybody including him that he was totally fucked. That's not a lust for power.

He was either the most pathologically stubborn human being in history or he had a serious bug up his ass to keep fighting for what he felt was right. The guy went down swinging even after everybody supporting him had left for the other side. That's pretty noble.

But yeah... kind of stupid. I'll give you that.

The Romans basically despised the Egyptians as hedonistic heathens who were too busy worshipping animals, getting shit-hammered on opium and fucking hemaphrodites to maintain their own empire. To the Romans, Egypt was an object lesson in how not to behave as a society.

Pompey went to Egypt last because it was literally the last place he wanted to go after having expended or flat out losing every other available option. He probably had to swallow his pride just to consider that shit.

Even by Roman standards, Pompeius' ego was off the charts. He spent his entire career trying to accumulate accolades and acclaim regardless of the cost. He didn't seem to care much about his duty to the Roman state which even men like Caesar took seriously. It's evident by how many times Pompeius switched allegiances and changed his ideology to whatever cadre best suited his chance to achieve greater recognition.

Sulla was an interesting man. I never considered him to be particularly evil -- just very efficient in his ruthlessness. Marius, his rival, was no less brutal in his proscriptions and his pursuit of power. Hell, he was probably worse.

Sulla felt a duty to protect the optimates and the Senate, whereas Marius only wanted greater renown and was willing to obliterate the state to achieve his aims.

There's no doubt that Sulla at the head of an army is a terrifying prospect, though. He was never defeated in battle and his opponents knew that if they did anything remotely shady, he would deal with them without mercy.

Sulla kind of pioneered the concept of his troops being more loyal to him than the republic, to be fair. No historian disputes his prowess as a commander or how much his men loved him.

They marched on Rome for Sulla /twice/ in a time where such things were entirely unheard of.
>>
>>63398473
This. He's a smart and handsome boy, leave him alone.

>>
>>63398565
Populares tended to be retarded
>>
>>63398565
Not exactly. Marius/Rufus made the army professional and greatly enhanced its internal structure but it was Sulla that was at the forefront of securing an army's personal loyalties to the point of their being willing to openly march on Rome and against the ruling government.

If Marius would've been a bit more charismatic, things may've been different.

>The Greeks now formed the new upper classes in Egypt, replacing the old native aristocracy. In general, the Ptolemies undertook changes that went far beyond any other measures that earlier foreign rulers had imposed. They used the religion and traditions to increase their own power and wealth. Although they established a prosperous kingdom, enhanced with fine buildings, the native population enjoyed few benefits, and there were frequent uprisings.

I feel like this thread has given me a true breakthrough because this is truly /reddit/ the show because everyone on that website is obsessed with this show.

but also, it is a great show, and contains an equal amount of liberal/conservative values that can appeal to anyone on 4chan, especially because of its irreverent humor and (sometimes) great writing

reddit is a terrible website, but in a sense so is 4chan because we created those Scientology faggots that made 4chan look like a bunch of Guy Fawkes wearing autists four or five years ago.

/tv/ is my favorite board on 4chan, but it has an unfortunate overlap with reddit. I'm just (very) drunk and am realizing that this great board has more of a relation to reddit than any of us would like to admit, what's important is that we continue to remain extremely hostile to each other to keep our faggot asses in check.

Rome, for a long time, was a near-ideal society as far as balancing savage vigor and principle with philosophy and progress, similar to America. Once they went Imperial, they went full degenerate, just like when America became World Police. A society must balance those two forces because they are essential together but cancerous in extremes. Rome's worldly pragmatism, borne of being savages in the eyes of Greeks, is what allowed them to soak up every bit of information on war and society and fuse the armies of the Iberians, navies of the Carthaginians, and society of the Etruscans and Greeks into one synthesis culture. That savagery keeps you mindful of your realities and your essential principles, what you can keep and what you can throw away. At the extreme, you become the Germanics who were content to fuck around the forest doing absolutely nothing for centuries but killing anyone who came too close, a degeneracy of its own. If the Romans were as soft as the other civilized people, they'd have no chance of conquering everyone because the "civilized" are complacent and trivial.
