Movies like this have an excuse where the character feels like an invincible killer. It's established from the get-go that this person is legendary when it comes to killing and that's all you need to know about this person when he actually becomes this sort of demi-god of death time after time.
I understand not being to suspend your disbelief when it comes to other action stories involving soldiers, rogues, thieves, and other protagonists who are more or less just experienced warriors with an edge of craftiness. But in this case this guy is king, just like John Wick or Riddick.

I thought it was awful. Mortensen is too much of a perfect dad/husband for the dark past twist to really matter, I forgave him (for nothing, really) immediately because he's such a good guy. It makes everything after the reveal fall flat. We should have been shown him doing something awful to make that dichotomy between violent gangster and family man

Movie is adapted from a comic. The second half of the comic is insanely crazy. Almost early Cronenberg crazy. You tell me if they made the right choice:After Joey leaves the hospital, he receives a phone call. Only, it's not his brother, but some mafia honcho who worked with Ed Harris' character. Turns out that while Joey made it out of phily, his brother didn't. He was captured. And the mafia has been torturing him ever since while they kept tracking Joey, hoping to lure him out. So Joey goes back to phily. Shootout ensues. Joey gets captured and taken to where they keep his brother. The brother is literally no more than a hidelously maimed and scarred torso at this point. Mafia guy hangs Joey by the arms, drills a hole into his leg. Joey escapes, kills the guy with a chainsaw. Then mercy-kills his brother. Later the police arrive, then ambulances. The comic end with Joey being taken out of the place, his wife is there. He tells her it's all over. The end.
