So what is the best way to own the Star Wars Original Trilogy? Generally I've heard that it's best to get either the 2006 DVDs with the original theatrical releases or the Blu-Rays, but I don't want to have to feel left out when Disney releases new Blu-Rays for the fortieth anniversary.

I don't really care about the fact that they're the special editions, most of the effects in them look nice and only 5% of the films are changed anyways.

You are right. The 2006 (or 2004) DVD release has the UNALTERED theatrical versions as a bonus (!) on the discs.

Those are laserdisc transfers and it shows. But they are, INFACT the ONLY available version of the unaltered trilogy. Unless you wanna buy a fucking VHS or laserdisc.

The Despecialized versions are fanwankery edits. They dont count.
>>
>>63379356
Download it off piratebay, that's how. Who gives a fuck about Lucas ediiton X when he's just going to release a new one 4 year later.

He's been doing it since the fucking 70s.
>>
>>63379516
I'd like to have them in physical form. Pirating was never my thing anyways.

>>63379513
How do the transfers of the unaltered theatrical versions look on an HDTV(more specifically, a 2007 Vizio HDTV) using an HD upscaler, then? Those are Laserdisc transfers I believe.
>>
>>63379513
so, no fixes whatsoever? They still have Mark Hamill yelling "Carrie!" at the end?
>>
>>63379750
So you're just going to hold onto a set of DVDs from 2006 for the rest of your life?

I happen to have owned that DVD set, along with 2 more 4 different VHS versions.

I still watch my pirated copies when I want to see the movies.
>>
>>63379754
>They still have Mark Hamill yelling "Carrie!" at the end?

Amazingly, for all the revisions, that has never been fixed.
>>
There are good laserdisc rips on the Internet.

>So you're just going to hold onto a set of DVDs from 2006 for the rest of your life?
not him but, probably.
>>
>>63379939
You know DVDs have a shelf life.

One day you'll put them in and they won't work.
>>
>>63379960
how many years? i also have a VHS set that I will probably hold onto.
>>
>>63379994
ranges from 30-100ish years. so long enough not to give a fuck
>>
>>63380031
that isn't so bad, plenty of time to rip the discs to a hard drive. desu I don't even watch them that much. my end up giving them away to my cousins.
>>
>>63380105
did 4chan just turn h-e-double hockey sticks into desu?
>>
>>63379994
I've been told they can start to go in as early as 15 years depending on how they're stored. Less if it's not climate controlled, a lot more if they're in a cool, controlled environment.

It also depends on how the dvds were manufactured. I've seen some very poorly made dvds, but none of them were star wars dvd's.

stored in an air conditioned room, should last fairly long.

I kinda feel like we may get another re-release of the original theatrical versions someday now that disney owns star wars. Lucas seemed to want to fix them which is why we had special editions in the first place, Disney will just want to wheedle every penny they can out of them.

>>63380368

The edits in the bluray versions are really jarring. Not so much in Empire but I just didn't like A New Hope because of it. I really, really struggle to enjoy it. Haven't watched Return version yet.

>I'd like to have them in physical form. Pirating was never my thing anyways.

Download harmy's despecialized editions, burn them to bluray, and print your own box label. You can't buy the originals in HD so don't feel bad about piracy.

Or you could buy the movies anyway, then legally download the despecialized reconstruction guilt free.
>>
>>63379513
>The Despecialized versions are fanwankery edits. They dont count.

That's not how you spell special editions
>>
>>63379513
>fanwankery edits

I just watched the first two and they're literally just the movies without the extra Special Edition edits.
They add or remove anything that wasn't in the original.
>>
>>63379356
Find and pirate a copy on the internet that's free of all the bullshit changes George Lucas made.

I know it's ugly but it's the best way.

>>63379356

aren't those out of print?

DVD's reflecting layer is organic and degrades over time or some shit.

George knew this
>>
>>63379513
I have the unaltered DVD version, and it looks like shit, the despecialized edits are really the best way of watching them.
>>
>>63383928
I love the weird white-balance, crushed blacks, and compression artifacts in them thank you based Lucas for allowing us to experience the original releases with the maximum possible quality

All autisms in check, what is so bad about the modern edits?
They're updates, are they not?

I'm asking this because I love the Star Wars EU but recently I realized I never actually saw the movies except The Phantom Menace.
Hell I have pic related on my wall.
>>
>>63380163

15 years they predicted for the first CD discs produced, which was shown to be false.

150-200 years for newer types like DVD and Blu-Rays.
>>
>>63385530
What's the point? Do you plan to donate them to a museum later on? Why not just keep it as data?
>>
>>63385331
Take ten seconds on google and learn what the edits are.

Do you expect someone to type it up for you? It's fucking star wars. You'll find a million things covering what was edited and you can read all about the outrage literally everywhere online.

Quit asking to be spoonfed.
>>
>>63385567

I have zero physical media, I was just writing how long they can last.
>>
>>63385331
They added in a whole bunch of CG that doesn't really hold up. It looks ridiculous. There are also a couple scenes where the added CG ruins the atmosphere of a scene. There's also the infamous scene where they added in Jabba in A New Hope. Aside from looking retarded, it ruins his reveal in Return of the Jedi. I'm not a Star Wars fanboy or anything. I didn't grow up with the movies. Just pointing out what I found to be wrong with the modern versions.

Some of them are really fucking distracting and take the viewer out of the movie, like the big fucking CGI dinosaurs walking in front of the frame in mos eisley, that jedi rocks song. Others cheapen character arcs and makes the movies more juvenile and dumb, such as Greedo shooting first and Vader screaming NOOOOOOOO when he throws Sheev into the pit. Others make no sense whatsoever, like Hayden Christensen appearing at the end of Return of the Jedi-- Luke would have no fucking clue who that guy was, and neither would the audience if they watched in release order.

Tl;dr the changes are awful and you're a contrarian faggot if you think otherwise
>>
>>63386174
You forgot. The other anon called me a dipshit and an autist, then posted a picture, so your argument is invalid.

You're wasting your breath on someone like them.
>>
>>63379356
I own every release from the 97 VHS to the 11 Bluray. The only version I watch nowadays is the Despecialized Edition.
>>
>>63385331
You don't fuck with movies after they're released. Lucas won't even give an original copy to the Library of Congress because MUH TRUE VISION.

Having just watched the De specialized editions, I feel like they could have kept a few of the non-egregious additions. Example:

Climax of New Hope when the rebel fleet is taking off from Yavin Base, it's just like 20 white dots shooting out on the horizon. It actually looked cooler seeing the ships rise out of the canopy. They could have left that kind of thing.

The worst effect, though, in the entire sexology, and the complete failure on the specialized editions to fix, was Obi-wan's saber completely missing the laser effect during his duel with vader during one point.
>>
>>63379356
Search for the "Semi-Specialized" editions online. They remove the stupid changes like Greedo shooting first but they leave in the good changes like the CGI X-Wings & TIE fighters in the Battle of Yavin.
>>
>>63385852
>adding cheap CGI that looks like shit to films that won awards for their original effects
>not retarded as fuck
>>
>>63386174
But Luke or the audience never saw the original Vader either
>>
>>63386999
The point of the DSE is to restore the original films, not horse trade about what effects should be changed.

As for the ships launching, pay attention to the PA system in the Yavin base. The X-wings were launched through some kind of acceleration tunnel like in Battlestar Galactica. The vertical takeoff is unsubstantiated.
>>
>>63387094
They should re-specialize the original trilogy, where Vader's ghost reappears as a woman, because he chose his gender identity the second he died.
>>
>>63387094
Did you miss the part where Lukes took Vader's helmet off? It's the same actor
>>
>>63387223
Huh, I didn't notice really. Vader without the helmet just looks like an egg.
>>
>>63386174
>Vader screaming NOOOOOOOO when he throws Sheev into the pit

This is literally the worst one of all. It completely ruins the climax. The sound guy who was tasked with that change should have resigned in protest.
>>
>>63379754
He says "Camie!" not "Carrie", a reference to his old friend Camie Marstrap on Tatooine, who made an appearance on the cut Tosche Station scenes. Luke had his old friends on his mind after witnessing Biggs Darklighter die, and seeing a woman reminded him of his childhood crush.
>>
>>63387338
When was this?
>>
>>63387392
Right after Luke destroys the death star and is climbing out of his X-Wing, Leia yells "Luke!" and Luke responds "Carrie!" Somehow it made it past editing and George has never changed it despite it being one of the most mocked goofs in the entire series
>>
I understand why there are so many bizarre changes in the special editions. Compared to the decisions made in the prequels, anything Lucas has done with them has been minor.

What I don't understand are the changes that HAVEN'T been made. There are tons of goofs and mistakes in the original trilogy. Some have been fixed (or attempted to have been fixed) in the special editions, but plenty, a few pointed out in this thread, are completely untouched. If you're going to fix a movie then fix a movie. Things like adding rocks in front of R2 or making a door look bigger feel like someone trying to find imagined mistakes after running out of real ones. But there are still real ones.

I mean for fuck's sake, any kid with an Iphone and a pirated copy of Adobe can make lightsaber effects. So why are the effects in the original trilogy still so spotty?

I will never understand the color correction though and how anyone not color blind accepted it
>>
>>63387564
I mean, I see what you mean, but after listening for it a few times, it still sounds like and excited "Hey!" It doesn't stick out like a sore thumb, but SW fans of course notice it.
>>
>>63386985
>Lucas won't even give an original copy to the Library of Congress because MUH TRUE VISION.
Holy fuck is this true?
>>
>>63387931
>But fans aren’t the only ones who want Lucas to release the original. Curators at the National Film Registry picked the 1977 version of Star Wars to preserve for history’s sake, but they still don’t have a copy in the registry. When they asked for a copy, Lucas refused, saying that he would no longer authorize the release of the original version. The Library of Congress does have a 35mm print of Star Wars, one that was filed in 1978 as part of the movie’s copyright deposit, but the registry, where films are meant to be preserved for history, is still without one.

The 1978 copy they do have is said to be heavily degraded.
>>
>>63386985
That only stands true for Empire Strikes Back. Library of Congress has an original 1977 negative of the original Star Wars that's been scanned into 4K.
