Promise is a 1986 CBS television movie presented by the Hallmark Hall of Fame. James Garner stars as a carefree man who returns to his hometown after his mother's death and has to assume responsibility for his mentally ill younger brother (James Woods). Woods' genius is in that he always plays an asshole -- one you have to respect. That makes him compelling to watch.
He can take the simplest lines, and turn them into gold "oh my god, this guy is an asshole, but he's right" kind of delivery.
There was one in which he told the protagonists "you could buy a lot of groceries with that" and with one sentence, it said everything that needed to be said. I can't remember the movie though.
