Inception thread

I know Nolan gets a lot of flack here but I think it's safe to say that Inception is his best and smartest movie. Truly a treat for the mind.
>>
Soundtrack had a distinct

Honestly, all of Nolan's movies are very entertaining and thought-provoking. Certainly better than the rest of the garbage that gets posted on this board.
>>
>>63362546
True. His dialogue needs work but at lest he tries (and succeeds imo)
>>
>>63362470
He is the plebians Nicholas Refn.
>>
>>63362470
Big budget, dumber version of eXistenZ
>>
>>63362546

His movies coast on cinematography alone.

The script, while in concept interesting, is delivered in such a dry and exposition-bombing manner that the characters feel like automatons just blurting out their lines.

The acting and casting don't really matter since everyone is soulless.
>>
>>63362470
nigga this movie was shit

"woah dude its a dream WITHIN a dream woah"
"dude what if like if you died in the dream you like died in like another dream"

its just an action movie that retards without two brain cells to rub together think is deep because they have ADHD and cant pay attention to a movie for more than the amount of time it takes them to tweet that theyre watching that movie

fuck you and fuck this thread

I really like the concept of time moving slower within dreams, since we only use 10% of our brains while we're awake. I really hope technology gets to the point where we're able to use more of our brains.
>>
>>63362896
That 10% thing is bullshit, you know?
>>
>>63362470
Inception is the thinking man's action film; a cerebral tour de force to be sure.
>>
>>63362896
>since we only use 10% of our brains while we're awake
[citation needed]

Brain scans have shown that no matter what one is doing, all brain areas are always active. Some areas are more active at any one time than others, but barring brain damage, there is no part of the brain that is absolutely not functioning.

The brain is enormously costly to the rest of the body, in terms of oxygen and nutrient consumption. It can require up to 20 percent of the body's energy—more than any other organ—despite making up only 2 percent of the human body by weight. If 90 percent of it were unnecessary, there would be a large survival advantage to humans with smaller, more efficient brains. If this were true, the process of natural selection would have eliminated the inefficient brains. It is also highly unlikely that a brain with so much redundant matter would have evolved in the first place; given the historical risk of death in childbirth associated with the large brain size (and therefore skull size) of humans, there would be a strong selection pressure against such a large brain size if only 10 percent was actually in use.

Nolan’s dark sentimentality may seem classical to naive filmwatchers. But the way his clichés manipulate viewers’ perception of the world and human behavior is merely timely, not profound. Like Grand Theft Auto’s quasi-cinematic extension of noir and action-flick plots, Inception manipulates the digital audience’s delectation for relentless subterfuge.

Inception should have been called Self-Deception.

So what was bad about it other than retards thinking it was deeper than it was? Because that's not an actual criticism of the movie.

it's definitely an argument for the movie being overrated
>>
>>63362745
>nolan
>good cinematography
>pick one

The only reason he gets the praise is cause of the concepts. Story told backwords, dream in a dream, 4th dimensional wormhole, etc. He's the only director ambitious enough to put these kinds of stories out, and the only guy the studios trust to do it. No one cares about his cinematography, plebs probably dont even know what exposition means, and yea, the acting is bland because people don't care about that either. they care about the concepts, that's all they see, and that's what they praise.
>>
>>63363722
It is pretty bland and mindless to be honest but people still say
>smartest movie

Even though I think he is baiting to bring out the tourists who don't know this movie is considered one of the most overrated movies of all time on this board

As much as people shit on Interstellar it was like the only fucking movie that year that wasn't a sequel or remake. >>
>>63362470
I used to love Nolan movies until I realised they have no rewatch value, they are well made, but when you watch them again you know what happens and nothing surprises you anymore
>>
>>63365502
The lack of rewatch value is largely due to their visual incoherence imo. Once the novelties have worn off, what you're left with is an indistinct blur of a film, which is only a little less headache inducing than a Michael Bay film.
>>
>>63365101

You forgot its twin: the Martian.
>>
>>63365502
What? Nolan films are some of the few that I actually like to watch multiple times. Sure, I like to space it out at least a year before I rewatch them so I forget some details to make it more interesting, but most movies I just watch once and never want to sit through it again, even if I liked it.

The exposition throughout Interstellar
>>
>>63362546

>>
>>63365679
No. It's because his films are very plot-driven, and so are entertaining upon first watch, when you are mesmerized, following the story and wanting to know what happens next. Once you've seen that, then there's no real rewatchability. This is increased by the fact that his characters are not very developed, rather, they are tools of the story used to advance the plot. Hence, why go back and watch the movie when you don't care as much for the characters?

>>63366988
There's nothing that mesmerizing about the plot in the Dark Knight, to take an example. It's kind of dumb. Which is fine if it's well made. And the movie has some decent performances, and creative realizations of characters, but it's visually so muddled that it becomes an amorphus blob of jump cuts and soundbytes.
>>
>>63367100
As a whole, maybe. But not because of the story or plotline
>>
>>63367197

I just saw your post from the front page, so I have no idea what you're really arguing, but that dissertation of TDK was one of the worst things I've ever read in my life. You clearly have no knowledge of film even in reference to summer flicks, and are trying way too hard to fit in here. That's incredible, in fact, given that /tv/ is literal fucking garbage, yet here we are discussing your complete inability to do anything but embarrass yourself. I will not be following to see any replies you make, so don't, but please take this with you: fucking educate yourself before you post again.

>>63367305

That's a big percentage
>>
>>63367197
>Plot of The Dark Knight is dumb

The whole structure of that movie, the events that happen, is great. It's also what makes it "well-made" which you said just after mentioning that the plot was dumb. You don't even realize the plot is part of why it's so well received.

It's not muddled whatsoever. Jump cuts? Lots of movies have those, also this should be encouraged for a film like this, considering it's a comic book film. Soundbytes: You don't even realize mentioning that it has soundbytes means it's solid and witty, and has some sharp tight quality to its dialogue and atmosphere. Movies often don't have lines that you fondly remember, so that's a very good thing that TDK does.

It's not a novel opinion. Look up that video essay In the Cut if you want a good idea. He analyzes one of the action scenes in the Dark Knight.
>>63367282
Cool story.
>>
>>63367420
You sound as if you could be the critic of the video essay that did that analysis.

He's reviewing and analysing movies while Nolan is actually making them. I think that fact says a lot.

Those who can't do, teach.
>>
>>63367494
So michael bay is a great legendary director who no one can criticize for anything because he's doing it not teaching?

What a moronic statement.
>>
>>63367393
Oh boy. A real fanboy here.
>plot makes the movie well made
Good execution is what makes a film welk made, and while that does include plotting, more often it refers to the actual production.
>you don't even realize the plot is part of why it's so blah blah blah
And after reading your post, I still don't know why.
>lots of movies have those
But none had used jump cuts so aimlessly until the Dark Knight, where the line is blurred between film and feature length trailer.
>solid and witty
I'm saying it has a lot of overcooked dialogue which can be mined for soundbytes in trailers. I don't fondly remember any lines from the Dark Knight. Because I'm not a massive faggot.
