All the bands I described were gaining huge followings in a relatively short period of time major labels couldnt wait to find the next Nirvana-like band and they all got scooped up quickly. (greenday was probably the fastest and longest lasting)
I'll Clutch credit for toiling in the underground for so fucking long. I cant count how many times I saw them as 3rd or 4th billing for bands that are now defunct in shitty ass clubs that are now closed. (house of blues took that scene over)
So to summarize, they sucked then and they suck now.
