If you pay attention to the scene where he's talking to Obi Wan while he has him captive it seems like Dooku legitimately believed succession was necessary because the Republic was under the control of a Sith.
I think Dooku was an unwitting pawn to master manipulator Sheev. He was jaded with the Jedi order and the Republic and tried to help the Confederacy in hopes to avoid letting the galaxy fall into the hands of the Sith. Dooku was not a Sith he was a dark jedi, and actually dindu nuffin wrong except get exploited.

I was just meme'ing. You're right, he did do some bad shit. Ultimately Dooku was one of the good guys, though. He was approached by the Confederacy after they were betrayed by Sheev and he fought to keep control of the galaxy out of Sith hands. The massive fuck ups that are the Jedi order and Jar Jar Binks helped form the Empire and put Sheev into power.

I think he was trying to play the double agent and actually help the Confederacy rise to power, all while pretending to be working with Sidious. Ulimately Sheev was the better manipulator and Dooku ended up playing into his hands.
