Yeah, I don't think they're that important, but look at how much Snake talks throughout the series. MGS4 has tons of talking. I would bet that Hayter has more lines in MGS4 than any lead in any movie. I do think that Kief's an objectively better VA, but part of the series' charm is Hayter's kinda-shlocky delivery.
People that prefer Hayter tend to enjoy watching anime. He fits well into their mold of what is considered good voice acting.

To be fair, I didn't actually play MGSV. I always thought the dumb 80s camp was the best part part of MGS. Like that Meryl and Sasaki scene at the end of MGS4?
