Dorothy goes to Hell is definitely his masterpiece. AVGN is different these days, but I think it's just because that shtick has grown old and been copied, and James feels it needs to change a bit. Board James is pretty funny and you can tell that that's what he's passionate about now. Monster Madness exposed me to all the old horror movies when I was a kid, which turned me into the pretentious film lover I am now. I owe a lot of who I am to James, actually.

I don't really know why so many people say that. All things considered two things have changed : production value (and at this point James is one of the most technically able reviewers online, especially considering he does most if not all the work himself) and source material (understandable since he pretty much ran out of NES games after ten years)
Other than this, he is pretty much one of the few keeping the older formula of "angry reviews" alive, despite it being outdated at that point.

I would agree with that. It's the same thing it's always been. He may have largely run out of games from his youth. But otherwise, it's the same show with higher production.
The only other person that seems to work on it is Mike, who judging by their Monday videos helps out with the gameplay and writing portion.

He doesn't do nearly as much for them anymore. He mostly just sits and makes fun of the game with only a few different camera angles. He used to do much more, like make Mike dress up as Bugs Bunny and fight him. Big Rigs was a hilarious review, but it's almost nothing like classic Nerd. Even the tone is different.

It's either or though, not both.
AVGN in its current state is stale, which is understandable since so much work is being put into other project (like the board James revamp, the Jekyll trailer thing, etc). It was understandable during the production of the movie but now there might bee too many regular content put out for such a small team (since it's just James and that small fat guy who runs the site and uploads the content, both handling technical and production, and Mike giving a hand). So the alternative could be cutting some of the output to make the remaining content better. The question then is what to keep.
Overall the problem is probably that the Cinemassacre formula worked when internet video makers were still amateurs or semi-pro. Now even smaller channels on youtube or blip have some full time staff, that way they can affort putting out a lot of content, all the time. Cinemassacre is still a very small team and they can'tcompetestaying that way.
