I think it stems from how close Catalan is to Spanish, fairly easy transfer if he already knows Spanish. Learning another language from scratch is extremely difficult.

I would say Italian is as similar to Spanish as Catalan is, so why not study that? If you go to Madrid knowing Catalan no one is going to be impressed, but if you say you speak Italian or French it's going to seem more prestigious. There are a lot of people in Spain that already know Catalan, it'd be more original having another foreign language. Honestly, I studied Italian for two years and it wasn't that hard at all.
