It's arguable that the Old Republic ever "fell" in the first place, or that it's transition to the empire is because of the jedi in a reasonable manner. Actually the jedi are lacking throughout the prequels. THe downfall of the jedi has everything to do with it. They're an out-of-touch cult whose duties involve intimidating corporations to resolve trade disputes (Lucas clarified that the trade negotiations in TPM would have been "mafia-like" with the Jedis offering a slice of Naboo).
