I think making Kilgraves powers a Virus did that. Occasionally you meet someone that builds up a resistance to the virus or is just immune. I mean Kilgrave took this interest in her abilities or her in general and seemed t keep her around more than any of his other victims. Giving her body more time to adapt that and maybe whatever gives her the strength may have helped as well in building an immunity over time.

Hes the only MCU villain that's gotten any sort of development what so ever, as so far, the MCU has been focused entirely upon heroes. Which isn't exactly a bad thing, as marvel's heroes aren't cardboard cutouts that exist solely to play folly(?) to the various villains (DC).

Kilgrave was a great villain, his power is absolutely terrifying. The fact that the guy with the power is a twitchy, narcissistic, self-pitying asshole makes his power even more scary; he would casually tell you to cut your face off with a piece of glass then walk off mooning over JJ without even thinking about you as you stand there mutilating yourself.
If you think about it, all the other MCU villains - Loki, Fisk, etc - have to fight to get into a position of power where they can dominate people and tell them what to do. Whereas Purple man *innately* has that position already with absolutely no effort in his part, it's an interesting concept.

I like that we never got to know what happened to those kids he putt in the closet. Must have starved to death. What arguably makes him the most frightening; not his malice, but his lack of caring for the consequences of his actions. Notice how most of the horrible shit he inflicts happens when he's not around to look at it. He just half heartedly tells people to cut off their faces once he's done with them, not out of malice but out of genuine lack of giving a fuck what happens to his "toy" once it's served its purpose.

In large part, I think it is due to him getting his powers at a vulnerable age and under dire circumstance. Not being able to really turn them off and having to hone the way he phrases things, he would have had to learn through trial and error whilst being handed everything he wanted with no effort. Spoiled him rotten, like ten times of that only child we all knew that either had rich or divorced parents and got every cool toy and thing, and delighted more in the satisfaction of not sharing that with his "friends" rather than actually playing with them.

Ward is in Agents of Shield.
At the start of the show he is part of the main good guys cast. By the end of the first season we find out he is a double agent and he has tried to kill pretty much everyone except Skye.
After trying to convince Skye he isn't really that evil despite fucking over everyone she knows because he loves her or some shit he ends up working to rebuild the destroyed Hydra.
He's the long running villain of AoS and a pretty good "turns evil" character.
