After putting it off for so long, I finally watched Starship Troopers. Why wasn't this movie more successful? Was the satire too subtle for the 90s public? Was the obvious "the good guys are basically fascists" so off-putting for that time?
>>
>>63233113
You pretty much got it with those last two lines. Throw in the fans of the book not getting what they wanted. It's a movie for cynical action and gore buffs.
>>
>>63233113
Hyper-violence died in the 80s and audiences wanted more moody crap.
>>
>>63233113
>>63233113
what? im my time star ship trooper was one of the most hype films ever. we all watched it loved it was fucking awesome.
>>
>>63233113
>Why wasn't this movie more successful
I'm thinking you were shitting your diapers when it came out and have no idea how popular it actually was.
>>
>>63233113
The only people I knew that didn't like it were the bookfags complaining about how it was nothing like the book.

Hell, it was even the first DVD I bought.
>>
>>63233428
I'm actually not american, back then we didn't hear about a lot of things. I judged the "lack of success" by its earnings, which were pretty garbage for the budget.
>>
There's no trick here, anon. Everyone saw the satire 'behnd' the action flick. We just all thought it was shit at that too.
>>
>>63233447
I liked it and discovered the book this year. It is a decent movie but it is probably the worst adaption out there, the book was so odd in comparison.
>>
OP, the problem is that American audiences are too thick to get satire. I understood what Verhoeven was doing and LOVE this movie. I wish he could do a sequel with todays technology and let it rip!!!FACT!!!
>>
>>63233113
>Was the satire too subtle for the 90s public?

I don't know a single person who got the satire.
>>
I recall seeing it twice in theaters.

But, I was also too young to get the satire.
>>

Fuck off. It's a flick and nothing more.
>>

It was cheesedick. We expect more from the man who gave us Total Recall and Robocop.

No it's not, people are separated into two classes and in order to stop being a "have not" is to throw yourself into a ridiculously pointless war machine, lead by people who would make Stalin blush with their cannon fodder tactics. Plus that you have maimed people all over the place exactly due to this military complex disregard for human life.

To top that off, the move starts with a school lecture talking about how democracy is bad. Nice paradise, indeed!

The novel basically has the whole world in a militaristic system.

No one can run for office or serve in the public sector unless they join the service for a certain amount of time. I think it's also stated that you can't vote unless you served.

On paper it sounded pretty good. Only the capable would lead and merit mattered more than family name or wealth. On paper.

Read the book man. It's pretty interesting and IIRC it was a great influence on the whole space marine thing and on sci fi in general.

The movie was a total shit fest and didn't even come close to what the book was trying to convey. I guess they really needed a name to attach to a D movie.

This is my favorite meme

Everyone got the satire . The problem was that the movie came out too late, it was after these types of action flicks were popular

Though the movie was fairly popular anyway ...so whatever
>>
>>63233113
How would satire keep people from seeing it, that's a problem people would have after seeing it. The problem was at the time big sci-fi action wasn't exactly in and also Starship Troopers isn't even a conventional sci-fi action movie so it's a harder sell. The young, pretty and not too famous cast and weird premise can make the movie seem strange at a glance. If I had to sell Starship Troopers as a trailer that had to appeal to normalfaggots I have no idea how I'd do it.

Every use of the word satire in this thread is hurting my head.

Starship Troopers is a movie they would show in the Starship Troopers universe.

The movie is popular because the satire is hidden underneath the plot. It still can be enjoyed as a straightforward action film despite the more satirical elements. Same with RoboCop.

That being said I don't understand how /tv/ pretends its a pro-fascist film. Verhoven admits its a satire and that Carmen is a "strong feminist character".

Not everyone, which is great. It's one of those movies where you watch it with a group of people and get several different reactions. It came out when I was a teen and some of the dumber kids definitely did not get the satire and even agreed with the political messages.

I'll always respect Verhoeven for being able to ride that line and actually fool stupid fascists into outing themselves.
>>
>>63236751
>That being said I don't understand how /tv/ pretends its a pro-fascist film. Verhoven admits its a satire and that Carmen is a "strong feminist character".

It's satire about pro-fascism because the book was actually pro fascism in a lot of aspects and glorified as such.

The book is more clear about there being other options for Federal Service to become a citizen than military service, it just so happens that Rico chooses the Mobile Infantry.

>Weren't people assigned according to a test?
They did in fact join up with military service in mind, but it was stated plainly in the book that there was non-combat duty if you weren't fit for it and Heinlein commented that of course there were civilian services to gain citizenship. The book was Heinlein exploring the concept of an earned franchise, the movie was Verhoeven reading 20 pages into the book, deciding it was pure militarism and then doing his best to shit on that.

Shut up you goofnigger, Verhoeven is a pro-fascist, he admires the Nazis and wants to make more films from the German side of things.

The world of Starship Troopers isn't fascist, it puts a focus on citizen public service as most European countries do and America would do if it wasn't a corrupt shithole.

A democracy with a hegemony council and public service qualifier for votership=/=fascism, open democracy is a complete failure once the state it represents stops being monocultural or monoethnic and the voter base is split between too many races and creeds, as we see now.

It's really painfully obvious so I doubt it could be "too subtle" for most people. Just because it is a bit satirical doesn't make it a good movie either. >>63239676
Just like everything Verhoeven does, first it's a very well crafted (sci fi in this case) film, and then it's a satire. And satire doesn't mean everything's a joke. The film takes the story andcharacters very seriously, for example, and that's part of its appeal.
Maybe you should see it gain.

The classic era looks better cause we haven't forget the good films. But back then they were also throwing shit with a fan, franchises and teen movies included.

>>
The "political commentary" is pretty thin, it succeeds far better as entertainment.
>>
>>63239535
That was Verhoeven's biggest failure in this. He believed that showing fascism at its best would somehow make the failings in it he's percieved more obvious:
>If I tell the world that a right-wing, fascist way of doing things doesn't work, no one will listen to me. So I'm going to make a perfect fascist world: everyone is beautiful, everything is shiny, everything has big guns and fancy ships, but it's only good for killing fucking bugs!
Why should we assume it's only good for that? That's all you've chosen to show us, Paul.
>>
>>63240009
>franchises and reboots are way more common now.
http://www.imdb.com/find?q=three%20musketeers&s=tt&ttype=ft&ref_=fn_ft
>>
Honestly I feel like the Halo series incorperated the material from starship troopers the best. There is something inherently appealing of the entire human race becoming one entity to fight the big bad alien scum.
>>
>>63239943
Back then blockbusters were actually good though, just look at films like Lawrence of Arabia, Jaws, Jurassic Park, and so on. Compare them to the highest grossing movies now, and it's undeniable that the quality of films has been declining. It was harder back then to make shit and get away with it since film production costs were higher then than they are now. With the advent of digital filmmaking and the democratisation of the medium it has become growingly easier for more shit to be made and distributed. Sure there was also a lot of shit back then, but the ratio of good movies to shit was far better.
>>
What's with these people thinking satire should be subtle?
Sometimes it is and sometimes it's not. Subtlety is not a good quality per se.
Enough with the false dichotomies.
>>

>>

They aren't though. If you went to the movie theatre and talked to a few people you would notice that they are normal people and are just as intelligent as you. People might not have "patrician" taste but that doesn't mean that the average person is a mindless idiot who is unable to understand the most basic themes of a movie. It would be pretty easy for them to notice how the movie forces itself as a satirical fascist pastiche.

Jaws, Lawrence of Arabia and Jurassic Park were great, yes, but those are still exceptions. How about Home Alone, Love Story or The Ten Commandmets? Mediocre films have always reached the top of the charts. I'll concede you that this is a shit decade for the multiplex, the seventies were better at that sort of thing. But on other types of cinema (film festivals for example) films are a lot better than the 50s or 40s.
It really all depends.

The movie really doesn't portray any downside to it. In real life we have plenty of bad examples of military dictatorships, few of whom give much more than lip-service to global designs. We'd much likelier end up with 1984 than Starship Troopers.
Also, under a true global government we really wouldn't really need a military per se, at least not until/unless we came into contact with hostile aliens. There's a case to be made for either or both of world government and earned citizenship, but it wouldn't look much like this movie.

No, fascism..

Instead of squabbling over iPhones and coal prices and other petty crap, a collectivist system would give FOCUS to humanity. Free enterprise would be left intact but the government would direct strategic efforts, such as space colonization, the military etc.

The last obstacle stopping us from the stars are the shackles of capitalism.

I would say so, but I don't think that's necessarily what it would look like in reality. There'd be no hypothetical enemy for swiss style anti-invasion infrastructures. If the world of today slips into military leadership left and right it's likely to suck almost everywhere. A true analogue to Heinlein's ST world would be hard to come by.
>>
>>63240523
You haven't thought this through. Capitalism is unavoidable. Every time it's ever been suppressed has been disastrous. Capitalism is a result of human nature; people only do anything for themselves. There's never been an unselfish act.

Pretending morality is going to keep humanity in line has never worked, doesn't work, and will never work, because it's arbitrary and enforced by nothing but ignorance, which is temporary.

Even if Capitalism wasn't demonstrably more efficient and more often in line with general notions of morality, I'd still be anti-collectivist for the reasons above. Capitalism simply the only thing that works.
>>
>>63240305
Like communism, fascism, theocracy, free-market capitalism and lolbertarianism, it sounds fantastic... in theory.

I'm a proponent of the "It Just Takes One Person To Fuck It Up For Everyone Else" theory of idea implementation. Every theory sounds great, until you implement it and (surprise!) people fuck it up. Lots of theories started out great under one leader, or ten leaders, only to crash and burn when that ONE ASSHOLE got the reins and ruined everything for everyone.

Examples:
Theory: Hey, here's a form of government where everything is shared equally and there isn't any private property.
Humans implementing said theory: corruption, secret police, gulags, bread lines, shortages of everything else.

Theory: here's a form of government where the only law is the Bible and Christ's love
Humans implementing said theory: crusades against other Christians, witch burnings, the Inquisition, Church-sanctioned enslavement and murder, some corrupt Popeswhere the first Church service they attended in full was their funeral. Seriously, look it up

Theory: With no cumbersome regulations, the market will be the only arbiter of commerce, competition will always result in the best product, and the forces of supply and demand will self-regulate.
Humans implementing said theory: first asshole across the finish line (e.g. Rockefeller) rigs the game in his own favor, starts a monopoly, drives competitors out of business.

TL;DR you might want to consider why the governments similar to your "collectivist, militarist" ideal aren't around anymore. My theory? It doesn't work, you'd give up a lot more than you gained, and there's a reason there isn't such a government around today.

The grass is always greener m8

>Capitalism is unavoidable
It is now, because we don't have anything better to replace it. It works because it's imperfect but simple. There's an elegance to it's primitiveness, but it's still a very brutal system that doesn't utilize mankind's assets very well or fully.

Someday (if we don't eradicate ourselves) we'll come up with a better system. There are inherent flaws to a capitalist system, ones that are only beginning to become apparent.

Quick example: growth
You might think "But growth is good..." And so we define it as a (or sometimes the only) measure of success for economies, corporations, populations, etc etc.

But constant growth is very bad. It demands gradual destruction of the environment. It necessitates the importation of immigrants from less developed countries, which foments social unrest and drives wages down. It demands a constantly-growing population to keep the economy constantly growing, to the point where overpopulation is becoming a serious concern. All because our system demands that nothing successful can ever stay the same, it HAS to grow or it isn't successful.
>>

And we never will. Profit and loss are what you get when you break down all motives to their core. Self interest is what drives people, and nothing is going to change that ever.

As far as growth, the universe is infinite. If human ambition isn't restrained by human ignorance we'll be spread out amongst the universe long before Earth is unlivable. Best way to achieve this is to get the fuck out of our own way and hope for the best. No one is in control.

Movie flops because people are too dense to get the satire, or do understand it and then realize what a shit job it was.

It was like babby's first look at politics and the realization that a facist state can only work with a population brainwashed into believing an exterior threat is big enough to give away personal liberty for the survival of the state.

I like to pretend that the satire found in Starship Troopers isn't about a fascist society, or even propaganda movies.

Citizens are people who joined the Federal Service and were honorably discharged and given franchise. Joining the Federal Service does not necessarily mean the military, and applicants may be assigned to any field where they sacrifice their time and effort for the Federation (Teaching, any of the civil services, experimental test subjects, etc), though military service is the most glorified. It all falls under Federal Service.

But that's wrong, people aren't individualistic, they're tribal. People instinctively form an in-group and an out-group, and selfless acts are reserved for their in-group.
>inb4 every act is selfish because e.g. it makes you feel good
How about dying for a country or for beliefs? The 'selfish gene' is out because people with no blood relatives left to benefit from it still do this. The drive to die for your comrades or friends or the masses of your country that you've never met has existed persistently throughout history and is often considered glorious and noble. You probably only think individualism is the norm because you're a male between the ages of 18 and 40 that's grown up surrounded by messages telling you 'a man stands on his own two feet' and 'no one owes you anything, and you owe no one anything' and most people spend their lives alone in a series of cubes, when historically this has not been the case and indeed remains not the case in many parts of the world.
