I've been in the field on the design side in a civil aspect. We hand drawings to designers who work with levels and do all the structural, but trust me they don't do ANY of the hard intellectual work, unless something doesn't evidently work.
I've watched an engineer make 100K just simply looking at a drawing for 2 seconds and putting his signature on it.
