Kickstarter is not a store, it's the biggest cash laundering scam on the internet today.

Well, this is all guessing but Jim Mallon was holding onto the rights of MST3K after the show ended, but held onto it for so long without doing anything with the series that a lot of the rights for the movies they bought for the show expired and reverted back to the original copyright holders.
Because of this, MST3K has had no home video market and none of the cast and crew over the years got any residuals from the series. They were essentially payed for the work they did on the show, but never got anything past that.
Joel and ShoutFactory finally got the legal stuff cleared up and I believe Joel and ShoutFactory now own the rights to MST3K, so they can do whatever they want with it. That's why there's been a slow growth of officially released episodes on DVD over the years because they were releasing them as they got the rights of the series from Mallon.
I can't speak for cast on cast stuff, but I think it was Mike who wanted to use the Joel v. Mike stuff to advertise Cinematic Titanic and Rifftrax, but Joel said that would just make everything worse. Mallon and Joel didn't like each other as they had creative differences as the show went on. Joel left the show because if he had stayed on longer, he knew him and Mallon would just ruin it for fans and the crew.
Again, this is all me just guessing from what I remember reading.

If the rewards are just a bonus to you because you're such a huge fan and you also say that everyone backing it are the fans. Why then is everything so overpriced. If you're doing it out of some kind of actual patronage they could sell the episodes for reasonable amounts and still make the same amount of money.

The kickstarter is not a store where you pay 39.99 for 9 episodes on DVD.
It is an opportunity for people with interest and money to express their interest with their money. It's a funding / investment opportunity. What I get back from my investment is the pleasure of helping Joel continue MST3K, a show which has been a huge part of my life. The show is IMO a bona fide GOOD thing, that has brought intelligence, humor and goodwill to TV for 10 seasons - and now one more season, thanks in part to me and other backers.
At the same time, I'm personally not willing to give $300 with NO rewards. I like the rewards, but they are not my main motivation.

Joel was a pretty unfunny prop comic who wanted a TV gig, so he came up with the concept for MST3k and the first station he tried to sell it to was called KTMA 23 in Minneapolis. The station loved the concept, and the station production manager, Jim Mallon, then scouted out the rest of the team: Trace and Josh were local comedians and hired to be the mads / puppets, and Kevin was hired as a camera man.
They got themselves a contract for one season, did it, and it got terrible ratings so it was cancelled. So, they decided to send a tape to Comedy Central, and it worked! They got themselves better sets and props, and hired an out of work actor called Mike Nelson to type up the scripts, and he turned out to be pretty funny and contributed a lot of material, so they gave him a writers job, and later, head writer.
Fast forward a few years, and Comedy Central want to make a movie! Jim says hell yeah, cos movies make money and that would be great, but Joel is all like "we're a cheesy puppet show, we have no business making a movie", and when he can't convince Jim to drop the movie idea, he quits, and gives up all his rights to the show except the name 'Gizmonic Institute' to Jim Mallon.
The movie didn't make much money because the studio lost confidence in it after it tested poorly (they didn't get fans to watch it, and then ruined it in editing), so Comedy Central cancelled the show, before it was saved by The SciFi Channel (later Syfy), though that only lasted a few years.
So then, it's the millennium, Jim has all the rights for the show, except the distribution rights for the old movies, and he wants moar monies, so he makes 'Bots Are Back', a flash series about Crow & Servo involving nobody but and Paul Chaplin (he was the not-Bill-Cobett-or-Mike-Nelson-brain-guy), and IT STINKS.

Meanwhile, Mike, Bill Corbett, and Kevin decide they want to do something like MST3k (with no puppets), and come up with 'The Film Crew', they write a few releases and sell it to Rhino Entertainment. Unfortunately for them, Rhino Entertainment is also the DVD distributor for MST3k at this point, and Jim is all like 'THEY'RE COMPETING WITH ME!' and tells Rhino that they have to pick between MST3k and The Film Crew.
Obviously, Mike and the gang lose, and The Film Crew can't get a distributor. So, they decide to tell everyone to fuck off and make RiffTrax, which is audio-only and distributed via the internet, where nobody else can interfere.
Now, Jim has sold MST3k to Shout Factory because he doesn't have the talent to bring it back on his own, and Shout Factory are allowing Mike and Joel to make some money off it by Mike selling his episodes through RiffTrax, and Joel raping the corpse of the show.
