without a doubt that's true, but it doesn't mean it's that close to French new wave. Fellini's mockumentaries a mixed bag, could relate it to avant-garde as well.

There's no way I'm going to write an essay on this, but Citizen Kane is extremely underrated and a pretty solid candidate for 'best film ever'.
Underrated by people such as yourselves that is, who are quick to jump on board the "sah overrated" bandwagon. It's one of those things where contrarianism becomes so popular that it becomes the status quo, and then everyone else is contrarian for liking it.

This is true if we only consider visual, but what makes ROTG great is the depth of the characters and the feeling you get that, as Renoir said famously, "everyone has their reasons."
Kane was tremendously inventive for sure though, but pure visual gymnastics can't compete with fully human characters.
