Hi Schlomo!

Depends on the kind of movie. Some movies I like being longer if there is a lot of world building, like Avatar for example. Not that that's necessarily a great example of a movie, but that was half the ride, seeing the world.
I generally agree with you, but movies like that which are mostly spectacle I am angered by if they're less than 100+ minutes.

Writer here. They do that shit so that studios can maximize as many showtimes as possible for increased profits. Many movies today are 100 minutes.
A lot of movies with good premises are ruined that way, because the proper amount of time is not spent on character and plot development.

Do Americans tip the same amount for longer movies?

>film is less than 180 minutes
why even bother?
It takes the first 90 minutes for the film to develop. Then the second 90 minutes is devoted to the unfolding of character. The final 90 minutes is devoted to the resolution, while your bladder explodes along with the main character's main love interest...

Or it's a bela tarr flick and the first 90 mins are shots of cows and alcoholic Hungarians drinking brandy and water and reading in a chair by the window.

True 2bhf.
Movies should range from 90 to 108 minutes. It's appropriate for Film and Cinema to run longer than that, sometimes substantially.
I don't know what it is but if it's longer than 3 hours my brain refuses to allow me to want to watch it. I just instantly think "NOPE" and I have to promise myself I'll pause it half way, have a 10 minute intermission to see to my affairs and then resume afterwards.
Most times I just lie to myself and never intermit though.
If the movie is well made it will retain your interest for as long as it needs for the plot to unfold. If you're still unable to watch it you just have a short attention span m8
Any historical epic films similar to Lawrence of Arabia that aren't set in Rome, Biblical, WWII or Ancient Greek

Andrei Rublev. 15th century russia, lots of great attention to detail in the production design, and a huge Tatar (mongol) raid scene make it my favorite historical movie, even if it drags in some places.
LoA is unique in the genre of historical because of the 70mm cinematography and the widescreen aspect ratio. I would love to see that style used to make a movie about Hannibal crossing the alps.
