No, he was portrayed as a villain. Mance was portrayed sympathetically and at the Black Water his opponent was Tyrion, who is one of the main protagonists of the series. Plus we had the implication that if Stannis won that Cersei would have Sansa executed anyway, so for her to live Stannis had to loose.
Stannis was portrayed as opportunistic and entitled form day one.

No, sorry. I like Stannis a lot. IN THE BOOKS. He's a totally different character in the books. The character on the show is compelling, but he's not the same person. He's a darker, much less moral person.
On the show he burns people alive for not following his religion.
He murderers his brother and feels no guilt.
He is set on executing his Hand and supposed friend despite accepting the truth of his argument, and only changes his mind when Melisandre convinces him.
He later manipulates that same friend by sending him away so that he can burn his own daughter and heir alive.
The only good thing he does on the show is lead his men from the front lines at the Blackwater. I'll give him credit for that.
Mind you, in the books...

Season 3 of the show is mostly kind of boring I thought. The Red Wedding is a highlight though. It was very well done.
Season 2 was pretty great over all, though I still like Season 1 more.
Of-course, the first book was also my favorite. Though I loved Clash and Storm as well, to me they felt more like one single story that'd been cut in half. I can't really remember precisely where one ended and the other began.

This pissed me off the most. Theon's chapters in Dance were the highlight of the book. All the fat and wasted pages spent on other crap that George had to cram in was worth it just for Theon's chapters.

Season 2 Theon is actually something I think the show did better than books. At least in terms of how his character was written and acted, anyway.
