Mace Windu is one of the very few you who can use dark side without being corrupted by it. Thats why is probably the only jedi who fully mastered vaapad, some others who tried, including Windus sparring partner, became corrupted by dark side and the form became restricted.

Why did Palpatine have to get mutated?
He was already very old in the prequels. Why can't it be that he just got even older, past the age you'd usually die, over the next 18 years, but he didn't die because he abused the dark arts and the best imperial medicine, so by time he shows up in episode 6 he's a monster that looks like a corpse because he basically is a dead old guy?
