I always saw the film as a big Fuck You to tom cruise, who constantly bugged Kubrick with ideas on what his character would do during the entire production. Eventually, Kubrick made his character a joke and banked on people coming to see the film based of the advertising campaign which made it look like Tom and Nicole were going to be fucking through the whole thing.
