What is the best concept in science fiction / horror? I don't mean application in the art of film making; I don't care if a particular film is garbage or not, just how interesting the idea behind it is.
E.G. It Follows - crap movie, interesting horror idea.
I'm interested in what good horror or science fiction concepts you like, /tv/.
The cabin in the wood f@m.
I liked the idea in Pontypool, a disease spread through words.
>>63146093
I liked the concept of alien invader in Oblivion
>this shit
>>63146093
Freddy Kreuger, of course
Black holes
Alternate realities
Lethal/sentient extraterrestrial organisms
The Thing
>>63146380
As long as the reason for invasion isn't earth's resources.
>>63146183
Why do jap covers and posters always look so goddamn rad.
Holy shit.
I guess The Pan's Labyrinth is not horror but it always felt very creepy to me, not only because the real world issues and issues but the general
atmosphere and style of everything. I always thought the pan was tricking ofelia. the ending caused a great impact on me the first time i saw it
and yeah i found the idea interesting
>>63146183
That poster reminds of me The Cube
>>63146183
Way to spoil the movie Japan.
I thought Event Horizon was a great idea and a great movie also.
>>63146492
Doesn't spoil the movie at all if you haven't seen it.
>>63146093
An STDemon is not really an interesting idea for horror you know
/tv/ hates it, but The Man From Earth was a good film that relied entirely on an interesting idea and people discussing the idea for the duration of the film.
https://youtu.be/NsIilFNNmkY
The trailer was very clever. It takes guts to know showing the whole thing. I wonder if the producers were happy with this clever choice to not spoil the movie.
Based Josh.
>>63146370
That was a good one, although the scientist turning up half way through and explaining everything was the point were the film took a noticeable decline in quality. I get they wanted to give an explanation for what was happening but I felt that was a bit of a hamfisted way of doing it.
I thought the concept behind Looper was pretty good, but I'm a bit of a sucker for time travel stories that involve crossing time lines and paradoxes and not just 'travelling to a different era.' Actually that just reminded me how good Time Crimes was.
>>63146581
I loved it. Cozy and an interesting idea
>>63146695
Watch Shane Carruth's two movies and Coherence
hellraiser
The idea that Mr.Skinless needs to absorb human blood/flesh to manifest on to this dimension is interesting
Plus cenobities aren't "evil" or "invading" earth but are just looking for boners
>inb4 it's horror/fantasy
They are basically aliens from another dimension beyond our understanding
>>63146641
but this trailer spoiled literally everything except for the old gods
>>63146787
Ask someone who has not see the movie.
He is just told it looks like a classic cliché horror film with something more but he can't tell for sure what it is.
>>63146093
Lovecraft tbdh
Too bad there will never be a proper film
>>63146093
Eternal torture and suffering.
A death is nothing. You're dead and it's over.
Being killed and possibly tortured though? Now that's suffering. It makes being caught by the villain much more scary. Stuff like Point Horizon is great.
https://youtu.be/yGz2xdQa1ho
So what's up with this story of old gods ?
>>63146093
I think that most of the best/scariest horror movies involve hell and damnation in some form or another. The Beyond and Prince of Darkness are my favourite horror movies and I think that maybe the hellish themes are what makes them scary. Bonus points for Prince of Darkness because it's also science-fiction.
Prince of Darkness is underrated as fuck.
>>63146422
This reason triggers my autism in every franchise. I can understand ifits old sci fi pulp and aliens want our oil and women, but in every sci fi movie that takes itself serious, its bullshit.
I rather have this unexplained.
>>63146695
Looper was fucking shit.
>>63146093
>What is the best concept in science fiction
The biggest bullshit idea in scifi to be frank is the idea of humans that manage to overcome petty things like national borders, religions and actually progress as a species and explore the galaxy.
>>63146695
That poster is fucking awesome. It's a shame Looper was ass though. Movie couldn't seem to decide if it wanted to be Shane or 12 Monkeys. Ended up losing the appeal of both. Levitt did nothing and the kid was a cunt, meanwhile the time-travel just felt weird rather than cool.

Are you a tard?
I haven't seen it in cinema yet but I love the idea of a thing that is always there but knows when you suspect it exists. Like it spreads like Grimms fairy tales but God forbid you hear about it.
>>63146347
I would make so many mutant babbys with her :(
>>63148073
Isn't this just The Babadook?
Deep Sea or Space. Both set an atmosphere of isolation and tension. It's another layer of shit that can go wrong on top of everything else.
I know it's a classic/cliché, but coming into contact with an unusual and dangerous lifeform in an isolated area. Dat tension man.
>>63147206
Event Horizon.
>>63148073
This was Slenderman's schtick, it's a shame that pop cultured ruin a cool idea so hard
Edge of Tommorow. Great idea, great movie
Pleasantly surprised
>>63149152
It's hardly an original concept though is it? They just took Groundhog Day and Starship Troopers and mashed them together.
>>63148073
From Beyond
I love creature features, cosmic horror and religious themes. Got excited about As Above So Below, but that turned out to be complete shit.
The Borderlands ticked all my boxes. Its the kind of film where not much happens, but if you pay close attention and put it all together at the end it leaves you with a real sense of unease.
>>63146093
Terrible science is always funny to watch.
But I would probably say that body horror (Thing, cronenberg, etc.) are great as is the whole "unstoppable" bad guy theme (fifth element, every bad guy in a slasher movie ever).
Cosmic horror would be great if anyone ever funded it. Something like bloodborne gives the right ideas in design for a horror scifi movie.
>>63148946
No it wasn't you fucking hipster. Slenderman hid in the woods and stole children.
>>63146380
Films keep using that photo these days. I know Elysium and at least one other did as well.
The three Mothers trilogy by Argento was a great idea
Suspiria is GOAT horror
Inferno is great
the last one is crap

Supernatural monsters, ancient curses, witches covens and satanic cults for me desu.

it's fucking trash you pleb
This. The idea of staying immortal by jumping from body to body over the centuries was ripped off from "The Late Mr. Elvesham" by H.G. Wells. And a good idea it is.
>>63152891
What's next, are you going to screenshot the imdb score too?
>>63146726
Love Carruth's stuff, even read the script for A Topiary
anything from red dwarf
Decades before X-Men, Frank Robinson wrote
The Power, about powerful evil mutants working under the noses of mankind. BTW, what about GOOD movies, OP?
the film was a little shitty but I really liked the origin story of the mutants and all. Had so much potential to be better....what a shame
There are no single great ideas in horror or sci-fi. The venerable old trope of "not all alien visitors are friendly" is well-used, though not always.
Don't forget about the law of unintended consequences. Just because we can do it, doesn't mean we *should* do it. Goes back to Mary Shelley. Even Larry Niven used the theme in "The Jigsaw Man."
Pontypool had really interesting idea
H.G. wells again. Do the ends ever justify the means? This began as an antivivisection polemic, and ended as a lesson in man's arrogance over nature. He "had good intentions"
but had it blow up in his face.
The corruption of innocence has been a popular theme in horror since Henry James wrote "The Turn of the Screw."
I think it was Arthur Machen who first did stories about body horror, like "The Great God Pan", and "The White Powder." Of course David Cronenberg picked up the ball and ran with it.
In the 1930's Sci-fi editor John Campbell said the mission statement of science fiction should be to explore the possible effects new instrumentality would have upon mankind. Jules Verne was doing that since the 1860's.
What's the name of that series of paintings by some dude about the hierarchy and flora/fauna of hell? There were rumours of making it into a film, it's super deep and complex with a ton of lore, had a bit of a 40k/WoW vibe to it.
>>63146093
Prince of Darkness had a really great hook - people all around the world start having the same dream, but the dream claims not to be a dream, but rather a message from the future. They have a few other cool wrinkles, but it descends into boring Satan stuff pretty quickly. Great concept, though. And bonus points for still being the only movie involving time travel I can think of that accounts for the fact that the solar system is moving through space (and Earth through the solar system).
>>63159993

computer takes over the world before skynet, pre-internet and pre-botnet era and there's no "everything will be fine" shit message at the end or time travelling shenanigans.
>>63148073
Roko's Basilisk has the potential to be reworked slightly and made into the basis of a pretty decent film. Something along the lines of Pi, but maybe prompting the protagonist to off a few people or something. Especially good if you could keep it nice and ambiguous as to whether or not he's just crazy.
>>63160166
No, more recent than that. I'll have a quick google, see what i can turn up. I read a massive thread about it on /tv/ a while back and the OP pic reminded me of it.
Ah, apparently it's the work of a dude called Wayne Barlowe, and collectively it's referred to as Barlowe's Inferno. Seems to be a series of books.
I love religious stuff and world building so it really appealed to me, sucked me right in for an afternoon.
The idea of new pleasures beyond normal human experience is a great theme. Clive Barker touched upon it for Hellraiser. Alfred Bester even wrote a sci-fi story about it in the 50's. I'd love to see it adapted for film.
>>63146347
Is this flick any good?
>>63147222
You are the ass. Looper iis pretty fun and good.
>>63154912
YAY FOR SPACE RAEP
The premise of Doctor Who is really great.
Too bad the show has been shit for the past 3 seasons.
It also doesn't take as many risks as it could, but that's probably because of the budget.
They should really do an animated series.
>>63157742
Pandorum is pretty nice, you just have bad taste anon.
>>63146463
Yup I don't get how a little girl like ofelia doesn't get freaked out from all the shit she has seen in that movie.
>>63160300
If you liked that you should dig more into Barlowe. He is a great artist. His stuff was made into a tv-faux documentary called "Alien Planet" which is based on a book he wrote about a potential planet and the life on said planet.
a house controlled by a malevolent computer
>>63146751
Always hated that they tried to cheat that main chick out of her deal with them. Seemed character breaking to me; suddenly they were active boogeymen, instead of the way more creepy concept that the horror of their domain is only for those who deliberately seek it.
>>63149506
This thread isn't about original concepts, but the best concepts. These pontypool supporters seem to have missed this as well

The Thing.
Great concept in both aspects of sci-fi and horror and generally agreed upon as one of the best movies of the genres ever made.
>>63160563
It's decent until the third act then becomes pure shit.
>>63146093
Alien 3 had some interesting concepts early in production. Space Monks on their self-made moon or someshit. looked really interesting. there are a few websites that showcase the artwork.

Zombies because people want to see asymmetric warfare and huge body counts which doesn't really work with gun fights.

Cybernetics can be creepy and psychologically horrifying when done right. Like that part in Frankenstein's Army where the soldier falls into a dumpster full of body parts, or when the little kid gets chopped up and reused later on.
>>63147053
Stuff like this, too. And some cosmic horror mixed in.
>>63164587
Seconding this. The Thing is the most frightening, paranoia-inducing idea for a monster I can think of.
