First, ticket prices have to come down. Something has to be done as this is by and large the one thing that is keeping many Americans from going to films like they did in decades past.
Second, give audiences a quality experience every time they go to see a movie. Make sure the audiovisual in every theater is perfect. If you're going to compete with home viewing, you can't do it with bad projection and fucked up uncalibrated audio.

There was a problem with a local huge AMC theater nearby where they would dim the bulbs for 3D showings for the effect as well as a way to not burn through them so quickly. A local paper called them out on it.
I know a buncha thearters do this. Even one or two times when I visited my parents was quite dark and murky. Shoulda complained. Never mind it was that shitty 4th Disney Pirates movie.
