Luke was tempted with similar demons. He was inches away from killing his own father, and he only stopped by throwing down his blade and refusing to fight on - would someone as humble as Luke really think himself worthy of the Jedi Order's grand master?
He knows that were he in a position where he had the most power at his disposal, the most authority and the most to lose... He could become just like his father. A big part of Luke's arc was him determining whether or not he's end up like said father.
