Are there any galaxies that aren't far, far away?

Yeah, even further than that

Seeing as how something like "far" is completely relative, yes

I always liked to interpret the line as us watching everything unfold right now from our perspective, while in reality the light from this galaxy far, far away has taken a long time to get to us. It's like we're watching all this crazy shit happen through the strongest telescope ever created. For shits and giggles we decided to watch the prequels by pointing our telescope at a gigantic, perfectly reflective mirror about 36 light years away from both us and the galaxy. Anyone else ever think the same?
>>
>>63085210
It is essentially the space fantasy version of "a long time ago in a land far, far away".
It doesn't matter because it isn't real and it's all made up. How hard is that to grasp.

I think you're insane

Lucas said he based the opening on old Flash Gordon serials, so it was probably just to give it a pulpy fantasy feel.
>>
>>63085421
You need to look up what "relative" means. The Andromeda Galaxy, the closest galaxy we know of at only 2.5 million ly away from the Earth, isn't far away when compared to a galaxy like EGS-zs8-1 that's 13.1 billion ly away.
>>
>>63085596
It's not like I take it seriously as some sort of fan theory, but that would be the most literal interpretation of the line.
>>
>>63085322
We're on a collision course with the andromeda galaxy, so we're actually pretty damn close to that.
>>
>>63085622

For there to be a relative factor, they would need to be talking about at least 3 galaxies. Any other single galaxy compared to our galaxy is far away, it can't be near unless there's another galaxy to compare it to, relatively. At best, you can say one other galaxy is 'neighboring' to this galaxy. "A long time ago in a neighboring galaxy...' But you can't say, "A long time ago in a nearby galaxy..." Nearby relative to which other galaxies? Is this Galaxy Wars?
>>
btw whats the connection with the new death star and luke's original name luke starkiller?
>>
>>63085747
The third party galaxies are very obviously implied to be all the other galaxies closer to you. It's a galaxy that's relatively far away, that's it. You don't need to know the actual distance of the galaxy, it's the mood that a far away galaxy sets that's important. If you need to know any more than that then you're probably as autistic as the people who write articles on Wookieepedia about stuff like water and chairs.

In a 2005 interview, George Lucas described how the final phrasing of the text for A New Hope came about. "The crawl is such a hard thing because you have to be careful that you're not using too many words that people don't understand. It's like a poem. I showed the very first crawl to a bunch of friends of mine in the 1970s. It went on for six paragraphs with four sentences each. Brian De Palma was there...". De Palma helped to edit the text into the form used in the film.
>It's like a poem.

It's never revealed to be important why the SW galaxy is further away than a neighboring galaxy. It would have been better to say 'in the nearest galaxy...' to illicit the imagination that it's reachable someday. Far, far away sounds like it's just fucking hidden somewhere else and you'll never find it so don't even bother even thinking about, kid.
>>
>>63086022
That's part of the mystery and shit if it said "in a galaxy right next door" well it'd be like too close to reality
>>
>>63085971
You're inside it right now

AND YOU'LL NEVER LEAVE.
>>
>>63086022
>Far, far away sounds like it's just fucking hidden somewhere else and you'll never find it so don't even bother even thinking about, kid.

Yes, that is literally the point of wording it like that. Mystery solved, good work Autismo.
>>
>>63086068

"in another galaxy..." would have been better and more accurate.
>>
>>63086124
Better in a science fiction movie maybe, not a space opera.
>>

what the fuck

No
>>
>>63086124
you are literally autistic, congrats

>>
you're forgetting about relativity. things far, far away are actually a long time ago, but we see them now so it's really the present.
>>
>>63085322
What is relativity?

Applying the same logic you could argue that one thousand years and one hundred million years are both very long periods of time, and therefore there's no point comparing them.
>>
>>63085291
>>63085981
I think he thinks that Star Wars is about humans from Earth.

"Dear Mr Lucas, I cannot help but notice that some of the wording in your successful film franchise is not entirely accurate ..."

that's already implied you autistic baboon
>>
>>63086124

It's already implied that it's another galaxy.

Beyond that this thread is retarded, there is abosultely nothing wrong with the opening words.

It's literally not science fiction. Lucas and Kazdan literally said it's not science fiction but fantasy/space opera. Do you literally see?
>>
Why cant technology like in Star Wars exist billions of years ago?

Why does one planet's technological progress dictate what can be labelled "Futuristic"?
>>
>>63086704

The entire intro is useless. It's not important that it was a long time ago, and if it's implied that it's another galaxy (near or far), then why state it at all?

They should have just put up - "This is a fairytale in space." How about just start the goddamn film instead?
