Joel did explain that in detail in his kickstarter updates. The labor, material and studio costs of an episode comes to around 250k, but that's only after the costs to setting everything up is accounted for. Hence why the initial fund required is such an exorbitant amount.

MST3K has more sophisticated jokes.

Rifftrax and MST3K are essentially the same thing.
>>
Rifftrax is a poor man's MST3K.

Film Crew was more in the spirit of MST3K: Riffing old B-movies with skits in between.
>>
>>63066332
B movies lose all riffing appeal when the "A movies" are just as bad in terms of plot while not being totally unwatchable.

Rifftrax was the MST3k concept applied to a more modern age, and removed from the limitations of only being able to use incredibly cheap licences.
>>
how does it cost 2mil to build a shitty set and talk over old movies

i know for a fact they didnt have this big of a budget for the old episodes

>>
>>63066528
Plan 9 is literally so bad that nothing could salvage it. I could barely last 10 minutes. Honestly, anyone who thinks that film has any comedic quality should kill themselves. Troll 2 is "so bad it's good". The Room is "so bad it's good". Plan 9 is "so bad you have to be a literal retard to enjoy it on any level".

Never bothered with Gigli.

>>63066524
Obviously, but Joel can't stand the idea of having the easy claim to fame as "the original creator of MST3k" and not making any money off it. That's the whole reason for the reboot, to stroke his ego and make him some money off "fans" and people pretending to be fans to fit in.

Also; Mike, Joel and the bots never do the aggravated shouting and ranting you see in retsupurae and everyone else since AVGN.
>>
Anyone have decent sized versions of the DVD art covers?
>>
>>63066288
>MST3K has more sophisticated jokes
Obscure != sophisticated. In 50 years, nobody will be a Joelfag because nobody will know what the hell he's talking about with his 60s and 70s pop culture references.

RiffTrax and, to a lesser extent, the later Mike era of MST3k will endure a lot longer due to their more observational humour.
>>
>>63066213
Did I enter a time masheen? Is this summer now?

Diabetus is the funny man. Slowbeef is the straight man. They kind of do it Japanese style. I'd also say Diabetus is more in line with MST3K humour too.
>>

Jim Mallon is the only one who makes money off of MST3K.
>>
>>63067077
Joel and Shout Factory do as well. At least for the DVDs
>>
>>63067077
This is no longer true as of September-ish. Jim sold MST3k to Shout Factory who were the DVD distributor for the last few years. Shout Factory then allowed Joel to remake the show and Mike to start selling his episodes on RiffTrax in a digital format.

Trace or Bill?
>>

Bobo went to shit as soon as they left the Ape future and he just became "the dumb one" instead of being an actual Professor who was more quick-witted than Mike and chided the other Apes when they acted like wild animals.
>>
>>63069257
Never seen many Roman or even any KTMA episodes so I can't comment but Bobo isn't that bad and Gypsy, while not particularly funny, is never on screen for very long. Pearl otohtbqh is often on screen and painfully unfunny.

>>
About 30 minutes left to the next episode, I'm hoping for Mitchell.
>>
>>63068214
They are keeping Felicia on a VERY VERY VERY tight leash. I think Joel knows full well that she's not worth the nightmare PR wise, so she's been ordered to keep fucking quiet and not make the revival all about her and basically piss off the existing fanbase to such an extent that they pull their donations and/or poison the well of the revival via rendering it radioactive by driving away the primary target audience with her bullshit.
>>
>>63072426
This.

The sad thing is Felicia could probably get the revival funded in a week or two but it would require her salting the earth in the process and alienating the entire fanbase with her SJW crybully tactics.
>>
>>63072426
I think she's one of the big mistakes of MST$5M. I know WHY she's being brought in, but without her it could be a lot cheaper and we'd have an option for someone who's got ham-talent.

I'm also concerned about Jonah, but he could be good, has he done anything else?

>>
Frankly, I want Joel to be the new Mad as some sort of horrific circular madness.
>>
>>63072653

It's odd too to spring for that much for the mad since she's just gonna show at the end and start since she's not even gonna be one of the puppets like Trace, Kevin or Bill.
>>
>>63072974
What if Felicia Day was a hyper realistic puppet all along?
>>
>>63072974
She could be Magic Voice or Gypsy. Just pray they don't give her a new robot character to voice, because I'd not be surprised if it were much higher production value than Crow/Tom and just completely throw the visual off.
>>
>>63073033

Like the new cast so far. Not sure about Day though, she seems a bit off.
>>
>>63075924
Same, doesn't seem like a good fit, but whatever I'm still throwing some money at it because it's my favorite show of all time
>>
>>63069197
Easily the worst. She had me FFing through the host segments every time, and I watched from season 1 (yes, I missed the KTMA episodes, bite me).
>>
>>63076008
Pearl is only bad because Sci-fi made the host segments so much longer and more involved just to merit the "sci-fi" branding
>>
>>63072653
Honestly senpai when I saw the notice that she'd be the new mad, my first thought was "well, back to FFing through the host segments, just as I did when Mary Jo Pehl joined the cast."
>>
>>63076008
She was the weakest Mad easily, but she still had her moments imo. You should try watching a KTMA episode, they're not as bad as you might think
>>
>>63076048
Oh, I don't think they're bad; I just don't have any of them. I'm one of those old farts that buys media.
>>
I always felt kinda left out. I'm 19 and only got to watch reruns on the website. I'd love to watch new episodes and actually be active in the fanbase. Feels like I missed out on being part MST3k club :(
>>
>>63076097
Ah, I don't think they're available in any kind of purchasable form, unfortunately.
>>
>>63076098
Ain't never too young for MST3K. Just download the seasons and savor the riffs.
>>
Damn, close as fuck to 3 mil right now
>>
>>63076203
I'd be so happy if we got 12 episodes.
>>63076194
I just wish I was alive when new episodes aired. There would have been nothing better than sitting around the TV with buddies and watching some MST3k. (None of my friends like mst3k).
>>
>>63075344
who cares if a black guy is a voice actor? No one sees him if he is funny who cares? A black host or a female host would piss me off and we already had a female mad before. As long as she plays a character and is not le internet feminist I do not give a shit.
>>
>>63076098
I'm only 21 and became a fan when they reran episodes on SciFi in the early 2000s. The possibility of seeing it on TV again, especially new episodes, is pretty fucking cool.

Also, you could find most episodes on Youtube, or at least the ones worth watching.
>>
>>63076244
If it makes you feel any better, I'm 25 and only caught the SciFi era live. It really doesn't matter as long as it still makes you laugh. Honestly the best thing about the show is how it grows with you. As you get older and learn more things more and more of the riffs make sense and every time you rewatch an episode you get something new out of it. I can remember seeing stuff as a kid that went completely over my head that I realize now are hilarious
>>
>>63076203

Unless the final days surge is significant that's about as high as it's likely to go since any Turkey Day hype will be over.
>>
>>63075292
someone stream more, i'm not done yet
>>
>>63076331
That makes me feel better anon. Thanks! :)
>>
>>63076334
Yeah, I think they'll probably end up pulling in around 4 mil, which is still pretty damn good for crowdsourcing a revival of a cult show that's been off the air for more than 15 years
>>63076362
np bud, if there was ever an incentive to know more things, it's to understand MST3K better
>>
Frankly I don't see why Netflix wouldn't pick this series up, even if no TV network was persuaded to.

Kickstarters get the lion's share of their funding in the first 3 days and the last 3 days.

There's been enough of them now that somebody has whipped up a Kickstarter prediction algorithm.
>>
>>63076613

That or some similar service is really the only way I can see the show coming back even with funding.

TV just won't happen, 2 hours is a fucking huge time slot for any channel to commit to these days.
>>
>>63076648

Yes but since this kickstarter is having a spike in the middle (Felicia Day fans and Turkey Day) that algorithm probably isn't a good model for this particular campaign.
>>
>>63076672
Yeah the only reason the show got picked up in the first place is because the Comedy Channel was completely new and desperately needed to fill air time, so a low budget two hour show was a godsend. Now I think they're going through yahoo(?) because Joel has a relationship with them due to Other Space. Could be wrong about that though
>>
That Gypsy bit! I completely forgot about it! Such a heart-warming scene.
>>
>>63076672
SyFy is losing two hours once WWE leaves in early January (which was the highest rated program for the channel, but that's not saying much). That channel would most likely be the best bet if this Kickstarter gets the steam for a full season.
>>
>>63076753

SyFy will just rerun their own shitty movies. All Sharknado all the time.

Hell maybe they'll make a Sharknado series.

Weirdly this movie's soundtrack always reminded me of Playtime's

That doesn't even get into all the puns they could do with Shark rhyming with Dark.

Are they releasing KTMA episodes?
>>
Part of me wishes this Ashley person was the Mad instead of Day
>>
>It's 2015
I understand that it fits the meter and the song's theme, but seriously, "It's 2015" is everywhere.
>>
I am a married man but fell in love with Ashley right now
>>
>>63063605
Dude someone set up a stream this is lame without a chat

Sharknado: Dancing in the Shark
>>
>Felicia Day
>>
>>63077316

Well that's cause the marathon just ended.

>>63077313

15.
>>
That girl singing at the end really wrapped this up nicely. I still can't believe this is happening. This is only something I've dreamed about.
>>
Does anybody know how to spell the names of Crow and Servo's new VAs?
>>
>>63077388

Hampton Yount and Baron Vaughn.
>>
>>63077337
>Sharknado: Ghosts in the Sharkness
>>
>>63077417
>Baron Vaughn
A shame his voice isn't as deep as Kevin Murphy or even J. Elvis Weinstein's voices were,

but goddamn that is one fabulous name.
>>
So they hit three million, the 6 episodes are pretty much guaranteed at this point.
>>
Also, the ending clip seems to have revealed the premise to why/how MST3K returns: Joel has sold the rights to the show to Kinga Forrester.

I watched some of his stand up and he sings really well, so I trust they'll bring that element of Servo's character back
>>
I wonder what the guy's over at riff Trax think about this
>>
>>63077649
They were in the commercials of this, so they are fine with it I guess
>>
>>63077688
You sure Bill knew what they were for? Shout could have just said 'hey, we need a Thanksgiving commercial'.
>>
>>63077649

While they're not interested in participating (Mike even had a full post in it) they don't seem to mind. And as >>63077688 states there seems to be at least some good will left.

The fact Joel has allowed Rifftrax to add some of the Mike episodes to Rifftrax's website probably helped. This is the first time they're actually seeing any money for resale of those episodes since Jim never gave them any.
>>
>>63077781

It is worth noting that Mike has never appeared in one of the Rifftrax Turkey Day commercials, it's always Bill or Kevin...
>>
>>63077649
They owe their existence to MST3K, but they're probably comfortable enough with their Rifftrax gig that they don't feel the need to jump ship. I doubt they'd be much against a cameo appearance, though, or maybe even a writing role.

It would be great if the three came onto the new MST3K as writers, at the very least.
>>
>>63077918

That's the thing that worries me the most more than the new actors is the writing staff, that's what really made the show.
