Middle earth was basically western europe. That's why people from the south and east were of other races. And evil, obviously.
And he started writing during world war 1, which was over a hundred fucking years ago. I just started reading a book about a guy's experience in WW1, and near the start they stop off at South Africa to refuel, and they play a bunch of cruel pranks on the blacks. They literally call them niggers, not as an insult, just that was what they were called. So even if you had no ill-will towards people of others races at that time, you would still be considered extremely racist today.
