I was born in 1997, what is this? Did people actually pay to keep movies for a week?
>>

pffthahahaha
>>
>>63041671
>for a week

More like 1-2 nights.
>>
>>63041671
three day rentals were the norm iirc
>>
There were different options: 1 day, 3 day, etc.

They also had video games a secret porno room.
>>
>>63041671
More like take your neighbor's blockbuster card and rent your little heart out.
>>
>>63041671

When you get BTFO (again) for being a child are you going to resort to insulting people for using 4chan (again)? Seriously I already told you faggot, put on a trip so I can filter you.

The trade off was if the movie was shit or just something you'd probably watch once then you only paid $5 for it.
>>

>>

I still can't believe they charged that much. I know that older movies were probably cheaper, but still, this was a weekly thing for my family, and sometimes 2 movies at once.

Thank god for the DVD to put that shitty company out of business. Absurd late fees, shilling popcorn and candy at the checkout line. Fucking kikes.
>>
>>63041671
New releases could typically only be rented out for like two days. Old movies that nobody gave a shit about were available for a whole week.

I don't know if Blockbuster ever had one, but many movie rental places had one during the 80s and 90s.

I mean we still have family video but it's selection isn't that good. Great prices for movies that aren't that recent though, 2 for $1 5 nights.
>>
>>63041985
Blockbuster only ever carried skinamax porn. Softcore stuff.
I used to work there back in the day.
There was this old man who was the only dude I ever saw rent one of those. His name was Woody Cockburn. I'm not making that up.

what was it like in those 3 days senpai?
>>
>>63041932
I remember when Blockbuster first opened and it was a big fucking deal because they let you keep movies for 3 days rather than having to return them the next day.

It was the whole point of the "Wow! What a difference!" tagline in their ad campaigns.

I also remember going to look for anime when I was 12 and all the Movies To Go had was Ultimate Teacher, Genocyber, MD Geist, Venus Wars, volumes 1, 2, and 6 of Urusei Yatsura, and volumes 1, 3, and 5 of Orguss. And they had the best selection in town.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/gregsatell/2014/09/05/a-look-back-at-why-blockbuster-really-failed-and-why-it-didnt-have-to/

There's a decent, and quick article examining Blockbuster's failure. Netflix's role in it is often overstated (such as single handedly killing it) but it played a major role.

Blockbuster made ~15-20% of its money in late fees. Yet Netflix was able to eliminate late fees at almost no cost to themselves (you still are charged if you don't return, and are charged for the movie if you cancel and don't return).

Blockbuster relied heavily on "power users," and Netflix, almost overnight, siphoned that from them. And Netflix wouldn't be able to operate the way they used to without the DVD.

Early 90's were a great time to be born. Get to live out the best years of your life during the greatest point in American history (until 2001).

People born in the 90's are adults now, functioning members of society. Any of those tryhards who are slightly older are butthurt about that and fear for their own mortality.
>>
>>63041671
Those one week rentals were only for older movies during blockbusters glory years. I remember paying 3.99 and the movie was due back before like 7 pm the next day. Keep it after that and it was 3.99 per day, and didn't go away after full price of the movie. I can remember having to pay a 50 dollar late fee PLUS replacement after losing and forgetting about a rental.

A fuckin complete rip off today, and way bigger back then in the early 90's. It deserved to die t bh.

Watchdog Video was a place across town from me, like a ten minute bike ride.
They let you keep five movies for five days for five bucks.

I watched so many movies, it was fucking disgusting. Never have I since reached that level of disgusting, even with all movies being 'free' now.
It was magical.

My first summer job was at a Blockbuster, I really loved the place and how I was the only one actually interested in movies and able to give insights to customers, most of my coworkers watched american blockbusters and nothing else. That first job helped me realizing that knowing cinema is useless.

i work at a hastings video right now. still going strong, renting DVDs and blurays.

the key is most of our base probably don't use credit/debit cards the way you or i might. they pay in cash a lot. also, we do rental credits if you return the movie early, so you play your cards right and you really don't have to pay for rentals.

i usually just use private trackers anyway.

I too was born in 1997. I don't really know VHS, these babies are more my speed, and even those are starting to become obsolete.

Even though it was only 9 years ago, 2007 was so nostalgic and different from today. I remember renting DVDs (no streaming, just good, sturdy physical discs the old-fashioned way) of awesome shows SpongeBob, Drake & Josh, and The Sweet Life Of Zach And Cody from Redbox and all the kids in the school screaming quotes from those shows (I'M READY I'M READY I'M READY, LEEDLE LEEDLE LEEDLE, HUG ME BROTHA). I remember sipping my capri-sun and eating a Pop-tart, listening to Soulja Boy on my first generation iPhone.

Now I turned 18 and am starting college, and it feels like my life is about to collapse.

>They also had video games a secret porno room.

Back in the days when the internet with gigabytes of porn wasn't available yet and you had to leave your house to have a wank

You know, there was a time in the past when they would have porn theaters where people would go out and watch pornos IN A THEATER?

There were also peep shows and "private viewing rooms" where people would go watch porn in certain cities.

Dark times, man
dark times.

Shit, my cable provider still has PPV porn on demand, and I always wonder who the fuck pays for that shit.

Back in the 90's I'd watch Cinemax at night trying to catch a glimpse of something, ANYTHING

Ha, I forgot Hastings still existed and was renting movies

I have one in my city and I never go

I guess it would be a good place to go if you don't want to torrent and you want an old school movie that you can't find on netflix/redbox/any streaming service.

Also just the fucking rental experience, nothing like walking into a rental store and checking out the selection, grabbing some popcorn/candy/sodas and heading out for a night of movies.

When I was little back in the mid 1990's that was our weekend entertainment, Fridays it was dinner, go to the rental shop, and take home a kid's movie, grown up movie, and a video game for me, return them on monday.

So many good memories, my first time ever playing Starfox 64, and Sonic The Hedgehog even earlier.

HA

I was born in 1981

I remember renting Betamax (no streaming, just good, sturdy physical tapes the old-fashioned way) of awesome shows He-Man, Thundercats, and later Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles And Sonic The Hedgehog from the local mom-and-pop owned JJ's Video and all the kids in the school screaming quotes from those shows (RADICAL, DUDE! COWABUNGA). I remember sipping my Hi-C Ecto Cooler and eating a froot-by-the-foot, listening to Nirvana on my cheap casette player.

Speaking of casette players, back in those days I plugged in some headphones to my dad's stereo and listened to the radio all day, popped in a blank tape, and as soon as a song that I liked came on I would push the record button... and BAM 1990's pirating made easy.

>>63041671

that's pretty much what keeps us afloat for now. most people still come in and rent the new release blockbusters exclusively, but the selection of say old horror or westerns or musicals or even just classics is fun to look around and remind you of all the movies you haven't seen.

but you're right about the experience aspect. a lot of people bring their kids or friends in and they all just discuss movies.

>I worked at Times Square peep shows from 1982 until 1995. Back when Times Square was a red-light district, you could get anything there. You wanted to meet someone, get laid, make money, get high? No problem.

>The Show World building was the peep palace—every masturbator had to go there. I started working at Show Follies, a satellite of Show World, when I was 21 years old. It was my academic study. Field work.

>You have to start out as a mop man. It was also called a scum scrubber, a jizz mopper, or a sperm swabber. You had to disinfect the booths quickly so another guy could get in there. Customers would spend more if the peep booth was clean. Our slogan was You drop it, we mop it.

I feel as though I need to clear some things up about why BBV is closing, and why they went chapter 11 in the first place a few years ago

>BBV used to be owned by Viacom
>Viacom are money-grubbing whores
>Viacom buys all of blockbuster's rentals and merch with loans, instead of profits
>every year use profit to pay off loans, take out new loans to buy new merchandise
>blockbuster decides to split from viacom because they are tyrants
>viacom takes all of blockbuster's profits from that year, but does not pay off the loans
>the loans were taken out under blockbuster's name, not viacom's, so the loans technically belong to blockbuster
>viacom does not tell this to blockbuster corporate
>when blockbuster finds out, there is already a shit ton of interest, and viacom has all of their profits
>desperately try every quarter to pay off loans
1 mil loan becomes 3 mil then 5 mil, finally tens of millions of dollars are owed
>go chapter 11, file for bankruptcy
>Dish network buys BBV, wants brick and mortar stores to sell tv subscriptions, plus wants movie channels with BBV logo
>closes unprofitable stores that were still around after chapter 11 closings
>has 300 locations left
>all are profitable
>blockbuster is profitable as a whole again, especially in the North East
>fast forward 2 years to 2013
>Dish decides to go exclusively to streaming
>considers selling BBV
>no fewer than 3 companies are interested in buying
>but Dish wants to keep Blockbuster logo for streaming service, cant do that if they sell the company
>decide to liquidate stores, put 3000 people out of work, all over the rights to a logo
>tell employees they are being laid off AFTER telling the news networks
>>63041901

The last time I went to a Blockbuster there was some old guy, most likely drunk, and he was making an ass out of himself. He was pissed off nobody had cleaned the windows. He kept going on and on that this was why Blockbuster was losing money. I felt bad for the store employees so I told him no you can download these movies online over p2p file sharing programs although it took forever to do so. He then went on a rant about young people and swiped a bunch of videos on the counter off with his arm before he walked out.
>>
>>63053566
New videos were two nights, old were three. It wasn't until later on that they changed this as a last ditch effort to get more customers. You could even pay $20 or $30 bucks for a month and watch as many videos as you wanted one at a time.

>>63053545

>>
>>63053778
I worked there. They had those Movie passes things for years. 20 bucks for one out at a time and 30 bucks for two out at a time.

There were multiple customers that would come EVERY DAY to get two new movies. I was so confused how someone could watch two movies every day. And they would always only grab from the New Release wall so they weren't even watching a quality back log of essentials or classics. They would watch the hottest blockbusters and eventually they were watching D-rated movies. Like watching TransMORPHERS knowing full well it was a knock off because they watched Transformers a week earlier. And these weren't the type of people who would who enjoy "so bad it's good". They would say Transmorphers was "kinda crappy".

I asked some of them about watching two movies a day, they said they would often stop watching movies halfway through.

I became only more confused at their choices in life.
