For the beacon chain that connects Minas Tirith to Edoras, does Gondor maintain all of those, or does beacon control switch over at Rohan's border? They acted like diplomatic relations between the two kingdoms were long since dead, so I was just curious why they were maintaining a beacon network at probably high expense and risk to military outposts in the mountains, like who've been maintaining these perfect log pyramids for years on end without ever once lighting them on fire until now. How did Gandalf know that the members of beacon outpost #48 didn't succumb to frostbite & cannibalism 4 years back (or simply being recalled by Denethor / King Theoden, for beacons on the Rohan side of the border)?
Why didn't they use an eagle mail-service to deliver messages between Rohan and Gondor?
