>>
why would you pay barely any attention to the movie and then complain about not understanding it

>>DUDE DRUGS LMAO

That's literally the point, you are retarded for going into this with the expectations it would be anything but.

Holy shit, you're a fucking idiot.
>>
>>62985045
I went in expecting a good movie, not thirty minutes of a fat guy in the shower on drugs.

>>62985053
Only reason I watched this hot flaming peice of shit was because you guys told me it was a classic film.
>>
>>62985093

it wasnt even 30 minutes, and there was a reason for that

are you SURE you payed attention?

It's more about the decline of 60's optimism

It's funny, shows Depp and Del Toro in their prime and creatively shot.

Way the fuck better than Bill Murray's version.

Isn't the movie pretty faithful to the book?

I like how the film triggers people's ADD. If you need shit spoon fed to you, go read a fucking book. It explains shit a lot better than film huur duur
>>
>>62987129
Yeah, Hunter himself was on set
>>
>>62985222
Definitely this. Depp and Del Toro prepare for this amazing weekend where they're going to get completely fucked and have a great time.

Except they don't. At all. Their drug use pretty much ruins most of the weekend and, at the end of the film, they don't really seem to have had that great a time.

That one scene with Depp reminiscing and writing alone really sums up the film's point and puts the rest of the film, which to be fair can definitely seem like a bunch of stupid shit, into perspective.

Yeah, a few scenes are pretty depressing. The scene where del toro threatens the waitress with a knife is disturbing too
>>
>>62988940

Probably the dead grandmother crawling up your leg with a knife in her teeth line.
>>
>>62985017
The film ecplores the hypocrisy and absurdity of the american dream, while critiquing the cynicism of post "free-love" America. Also comments on Vegas and its role in the deterioration of the American spirit.

However on the surface it serves as fun drug fueled adventure that satisfies on its own without having to look deeper. Either way its a beautifully directed and faithful adaptation of the novel.

Not really: the movie is more a DUDE DRUGS LMAO comedy with the Wave speech shoehorned in, ending on a triumphant note instead of depressing.

i get that people are annoyed by basic hedonist drugs and dont like movies of seth rogan smoking weed and going 'duuuuude '

but who the hell isn't fascinated by psychs? really? it's the stuff of dreams, of the far reaches of your mind, it's exploring reality, - of all people shut ins like 4channers should be most interested in these kind of psychonautics.

its kind of bafflign to me anyone could not be fascinated by the warping of reality, or find a paranoid romp through such an unstable reality funny.

f&l in las vegas is practically one long greentext farce of being anxiety ridden and awkward as fuck
there is something inherently funny in seeing a grown man reduced to a babbling idiot

Not necessarily psychedelics but different mind sets and done in a style of psychedelia, but also A Scanner Darkly is the spiritual successor and goes much more into drug use.

I'm fairly convinced after years of 4chan and seeing the reactions drugs often get is that it's simply a social thing.

You'd have to interact with others to be introduced/acquire drugs. People and 4chan especially throw all logic out the window when something touches their insecurities.

Never knew this movie had a book and I especially didn't know that the "Waves" speech was from this work. Definitely going to read the book now, that speech was amazing. I remember having read it from some copypasta from /b/ and thinking it was amazing even coming from some retard

>>
>>62997709

>>
>>62997709
Waking Life is 10/10
I get tired of hearing it called pretentious
It's about a guy dreaming and walking around in his dream talking to people
A lot of the cast came up with their own speeches

Linklater set out to do 2 things : Capture the feeling of a dream, and capture conversation and ideas

If you think either of those things are 'pretentious' you're a fucking imbecile
Sure some of the people's speeches are out there, Linklater's most of all. Who cares? The film doesn't ask you once to believe any of them. The film rarely seems to itself. It even pokes fun at over-intellectualizing stuff with the pack of guys who are 'all theory no action'

it's about capturing the bizzare thoughts you can get in a dream, fully formed ideas, and thinking, where the hell does it come from?

>If the current polls are reliable—and even if they aren’t, the sheer size of the margin makes the numbers themselves unimportant—Nixon will be reelected by a huge majority of Americans who feel he is not only more honest and more trustworthy than George McGovern, but also more likely to end the war in Vietnam.

>The polls also indicate that Nixon will get a comfortable majority of the Youth Vote. And that he might carry all fifty states.

>Well . . . maybe so. This may be the year when we finally come face to face with ourselves; finally just lay back and say it—that we are really just a nation of 220 million used car salesmen with all the money we need to buy guns, and no qualms at all about killing anybody else in the world who tries to make us uncomfortable.

>The tragedy of all this is that George McGovern, for all his mistakes and all of his imprecise talk about “new politics” and “honesty in government,” is really one of the few men who’ve run for president of the United States in this century who really understands what a fantastic monument to all the best instincts of the human race this country might have been, if we could have kept it out of the hands of greedy little hustlers like Richard Nixon.

>McGovern made some stupid mistakes, but in context they seem almost frivolous compared to the things Richard Nixon does every day of his life, on purpose, as a matter of policy and a perfect expression of everything he stands for.

>Jesus! Where will it end? How low do you have to stoop in this country to be president?
