That was just an easy explaination at the start of S6 for new viewers who wouldn't know what River's gimmick was. I find it hard to believe that it was Moffat's actual plan for River.
What would be the point of the diaries if that was true? Every time they meet, the Doctor and River confront diaries. If River was really travelling in the exactly the opposite direction to the Doctor, that would be pointless, because their diaries would never match. They could never both remember the same adventure.
And besides, when he wrote Astronaut, wasn't Moffat already planning to show the first time River met the Doctor in Let's Kill Hitler, and then to put her in the finale? He never meant her to meet the Doctor in exactly the opposite chronological order, it was just the wrong choice of words.
