Great delivery, shit dialogue. It was well salvaged

I'd instantly assume this was bait, but I know how retarded /tv/ is.

Deadwood literally has the best dialogue of any show on television

it's also the best show that's ever been on tv

I'm not that guy but you're wrong. The first season is absolutely brilliant, the dialog and writing are all some of the best I've ever seen on tv. Unfortunately season 2 falls into a situation where the writers are obviously so in love with the sound of their own language that it just becomes turgid and ridiculous sounding. It's such a shame too because it probably could have been one of the best shows ever but in season 2 it just sinks so hard into absolute ridiculous self-absorption.

sorry mates, I spend most of my time reading books so I probably have a much stronger grasp than you guys on what constitutes good writing. Believe me, the ridiculous self-absorption of Deadwood's season 2 that is far more in service of the sound of the language than any progression of plot or character is appallingly dull to listen to. Don't fall into the trap of "ooh it sounds pretty therefore it's good." Y'all niggas probably love Oscar Wilde too.

>>
>>62964138

are you actually suggesting that Deadwood's dialog is meant to sound organic? you fucking serious mate? it's entirely geared towards sounding as though Melville or McCarthy wrote it but the writers don't have the abilities to pull it off. the entire second season sounds like someone wanking themselves off.

and I'm sorry, I assess art based on what it is not based on what the writers say they were trying to do in interviews. I'm sorry I don't read celebrity gossip mate. I guess it's your familiarity with such nonsense that limits your ability to assess proper writing.

no idea what you're talking about. Woolf is shit, actually she's probably a pretty good comparison for the issues in Deadwood's writing. And yeah you thick fuck, a show that tries so hard to be as literary as possible in its language is better critiqued by people more familiar with writing than you clearly are. Also seriously are you just googling famous writers because you sound so stupid.

>>62964249
Nope. He's a relatively normal American, although he had immigrant parents. They and he weren't involved in crime in any way. He worked as an actor from an early age. His performance is nothing short of brilliant. Tony feels more like a real person than anyone I've seen on TV and most movies.

McShane is great, but his character simply isn't as fleshed out or nuanced as Tony. You see Swearingen confront significantly fewer types of issues, so we know less about him as a person, and he naturally shows less range. Tony exhibits pretty much the entire range of human emotion and experience. He is "totally human."

>>62964202
We aren't talking about which show is the best (although The Sopranos is easily), so I won't get into that.

>>
>>62964609

nope, that's not at all what I said. people were calling me a contrarian for not liking Woolf, that's not the case. some famous authors, just like some famous movies, are shit. that doesn't mean the only answer is to go to obscure authors. eg. Faulkner is a genius and Woolf could never have written anything half as good as his best works

Both 'To the Lighthouse' and 'The Waves' are superior works - 'The Waves' being her greatest work by far. It doubles as a nice bellwether to weed out the lesser readers who write it off.

Based on the whole season? No.

Based on Omega Station? Vaughn might have a legit chance.

His acting in the last scene was some of the strongest I've ever seen.
>>
>>62964715

The Waves is one of the most offensive, disgusting examples of writing I can think of. It's just so atrociously self-involved and worthless. Of course it's beautiful to read but it's just an appalling example of the worst excesses of literature. Woolf was an arrogant, elitist cunt and her writing reflects her personality perfectly. Dalloway on the other hand is a masterpiece. Lighthouse has brilliant stretches (mostly the first third) but ultimately also goes up its own ass. Her writing is so insufferably cerebral and detached from any sense of humanity. A writer designed for grad students to pore over.
>>
>>62962356
>best television performance

might as well be the special olympics

>>62964715

also how do I sound like I don't read much when Woolf is literally the only author that's been discussed and I've read all the 3 (whoa what a dense knowledge of an author!) works that have been addressed.

You literally just wrote I didn't like it because I didn't like it in 90 too many words.

You probably don't like Joyce either since his modernist tendencies are so similar.
>>
>>62964972

nah, Joyce is actually worthwhile. Again though people like Faulkner and Gombrowicz are far better than both Joyce and Woolf.
>>
>>62964844

I feel embarrassed for anon like you when I read posts like these.

Endless highfalutin quips with no consistent reasoning to them whatsoever. Just a lot of witless angst and emotion.

Explain in detail, please. Enlighten us lowly stock. Explain how her poesis is so vastly different in 'Mrs. Dalloway' than it is in 'The Waves'. Go ahead.

Remember, now: avoid all of these errant displays of angst and try to realise a detailed explanation of your position. I'll wait.
>>
>>62965092

Again, had you any interpretive abilities you likely would have understood that my issues with The Waves were based upon its entire lack of characterization and in turn a lack of any emotional core. The aesthetic quality of her writing in Dalloway is used in a purposeful manner, it is used to construct a deeply moving central character who's complexities are captured well by Woolf's dense lyricism and careful detail. The Waves on the other hand takes the same lyrical language and uses it for almost no tangible purpose at all, its narrative obscurities accomplish nowhere near the same impact that she manages in Dalloway.

Anyway, why can't you accept that some people don't like Woolf? I don't understand. The people who gravitate towards the towering displays of a linguistic infatuation like The Waves will likely be drawn towards season 2 of Deadwood. That kind of writing is anathema to my aesthetic sensibilities and so I hate both iterations of it. This is a matter of taste, why are you so upset with me for stating mine?
>>
>>62965250

>Again, had you any interpretive abilities you likely would have understood that my issues with -

Don't be coy. We both know you were only shitposting emotional gibberish before. This on the other hand is a decent reply. Now I can actually understand your position.

I can see your frustration over a certain lack of "emotional core", but I think you're not taking into account the very intentional experimentation that was going on with female writers at the time. There were many female writers in this period that were trying to capture aesthetic notions of female psyche and wanted to convey how transitive and listless it is. This approach to prose isn't without a political element to it. Bachmann's 'Malina' would probably be a similar work in this vein. 'Asphodel' by H.D was another. There's more, but I'd have to think on it. Blanking right now.

>This is a matter of taste, why are you so upset with me for stating mine?

Just be less of a dickhead about it, bruv.
>>
>>62965552

Yes I can appreciate everything you're saying and I can understand what Woolf was doing and there are still passages of The Waves that return to me because of their lyrical beauty. Again though, stuff like Asphodel by H.D. is just against what I see as worthwhile, beautiful works of literature. I haven't read Bachmann but I just personally don't gravitate towards works that are interesting on a cerebral or conceptual level but don't function all that interestingly on any other level.

Anyway, nice to see there are other people who read on this board. Sorry for coming off like a dick, I think this board/entire website are generally toxic when it comes to fostering healthy discussion because of the hostility that surrounds every topic and I am unfortunately often sucked into that myself.

Have a good night
>>
>>62965641

All good, ultimately if this sort of prose isn't in keeping with your sensibilities then it is what it is.

Night, m8.

22. Friday Night Lights
27. LOST
