The ending implies that death is on his doorstep, he gets killed nearly immediately after the fade to black.

It didn't include Anton returning the money, which happens in the book. I think that is why so many people have trouble with the way the movie ended. It probably should be implied by the fact that he still killed Kelly Macdonald's character, but even then he offered here the coin toss so maybe not.
