It's good and I suppose you can make an originalist argument if it's what Raimi wanted but I can't say that's it "better", the S-Mart ending seems more in line with the S-Mart ending and gave Ash a place to go from there, specifically the current series.

In a recent interview Sam said the the mall ending is canon.
However AoD is not officially canon in AvED.
This last episode was pretty bland.
The humor wasn't really there and Ash's "trip" wasn't really that fun or exciting.
