Early adopter's a shit.

Fuck no, I just got into buying blurays

not until 10 years from now when 4k BDs are under $15

The first 4K discs coming out are all trash:

The Amazing Spiderman 2 (Tomatometer: 52%)

Chappie (31%)

Hancock (41%)

Pineapple Express (68%)

Salt (62%)

The Smurfs 2 (14%)
>>
4k is already dead in the water.
Based South Korea and Japan are launching 8k TVs, content and services early 2016

I don't even have a 4k display yet. There doesn't seem any point with a 50" TV.

70mm film transfers to 4k are the only ones worth it, the rest is just upscaled shit
>>
when will this 4/8k meme end and manufactures can focus on shit that matters more for a display, better color and wesley snipes level blacks?

Guys is it bad that I DON'T want 4k to take off? /v/ wants it to, but dear god almighty I don't. I have over 700+ blurays and 1000+ dvd and blurays collected. I have nearly every classic you can think of and a 65-inch panasonic zt60 (last plasma before OLED with the pinnacle of film pic quality). Everything looks perfect and I still collect blurays biweekly. Why do I need to upgrade?

Sure, I'd like the zero black levels of an OLED, but I don't want a fucking 4ktv and see y shit upscaled. Also, OLEDs are still shitty with motion resolution under 60fps for films. An I don't want my collection upscaled and having to restart and rebuy everything. Why is everything rushing so fast? Why do we need another standard? Television programs are at at fucking 720p, most people have and still buy dvds. Wtf is going on?? Will 4k please die?

I just started investing in blu ray last year and have a sweet collection, I'm staying with it for as long as I can.

Also how many films really need a 4K transfer right now?
>>
>>62935879

Ultra high dynamic contrast ratio is coming. I doubt it will reach plasma levels, but oled is getting cheaper every year.
>>
>>62935479
1080 blurays are still struggling against DVDs, there's no way this is going to be successful. I'm quite happy with my dvd collection.
>>
only once resolution has gone higher than the human eye can perceive (8k resolution on a standard screen size ) will I upgrade.

They don't want to release the good movies until they can make a big deal about it, so they have to wait until more people can take 4k media.
>>
how much do you guys think the first 4k BD movie and player will cost?
>>
>>62935922

Why is it that people like you buy into technology that has to become obsolete at some point and then get upset that your technology has become obsolete.

>>62935879

They do, it's just that these things end up costing ten times what people are willing to pay for and what most media is capable of even utilizing.
>>
>>62936038

No. They were great but oled actually switches that bit of the screen off for black.
>>
>>62936140
About £300, the ps4 has 4k playback.
>>
>>62936038
After being calibrated, my zt60 basically has perfect color, and the blacks are the DEEPEST for any non-OLED set guaranteed. It was the last set Panasonic made before they transitioned to full OLED production and sold off all plasmas. It's the pinnacle of picture quality and what Panasonic was working up towards, a loveletter to a generation. It's a beauty. The only next thing OLED can do better is blacks definitively. Everything else is objectively worse, so LG are not reeling me in. ESPECIALLY with 4k and overpriced shit.

LONG LIVE PLASMA!!
>>
>>62936074

Can you honestly see the difference?

I have a 1080p panasonic plasma (I'm not the guy above). I see no difference between it and the 4ks on sale in the shops now in terms of pixels. The colours on it are better than the much newer LEDs on sale.
>>
>>62936214
what year did you buy the zt60 and for how much?
>>
>>62936214
>my zt60 basically has perfect color
Not really. New standards will increase the available colour spectrum, something that won't work on your plasma.
>>
>>62936237
2013 for $3500

STILL LOVE IT AND VERY GRATEFUL. THANK YOU PANASONIC! YOU WILL BE MISSED
>>
>>62936218
I think the only selling point 4k has is for bigger screens. You are not going to see a difference between 1080 and 4k on a 24 inch screen because of pixel density unless you have your nose pressed against the screen, but it could be more noticeable on 100+ inch screens.

This is for people who want the cinema experience without having to go to the cinema, or can't go to the cinema because of the no singles policy.
>>
>>62935945
that is more the screen type.
Plasma and OLED have the best black levels.

It's a good marketing move. The price for tvs have really dumped the last couple of years and they need something new to drive a higher price point. I'm not really sure your average person is even going to care.

We're not looking at the bigger picture.

For a long time, 14"-21" CRT screens were all most people had. These days it's 42"-50" LED. TV's got thinner and we found more space. What's to stop standard screens getting wallpaper thin and taking up an entire wall? 4k and 8k would be really noticeable in that scenario.

TRUE enthusiasts do not pirate because not all pirated content is treated equally. If the product is not well-known, you will NOT get the best possible quality and all of the features. Don't you want that?? Oh wait that's right you don't because you're from /pol/ and you only know about Lawrence of Arabia from IMDB'S top 250. Get outta here, man. This is why I'm splurging the $500 on this because you will NEVER find the bluray rips for every LUPIN special, and I want the best because I'm a genuine fan and care about the series.

You have the blu-Ray which was remastered in 4K (ie they scanned the original film elements at 4K) before compressing to 1080p. This still provides better picture quality than the old master they were using (as it allows for better compression/more details) but it's still 1080p you are watching the film in

>>
>>62937943
Okay, 4k is not standard yet and won't be for maybe 3-5+ years. PS4/Xboxes don't support 4k, while only a handful of televisions and players support 4k natively.

A lot of content that is streamed at 4k on Netflix and Sony's service don't infact have 4k detail, like the new Jessica Jones and other content. A lot of P2P encoders are ripping @4k - 2160p and downscaling to 1080p. IIRC, 4k webrips are over 100gbs, this just means greater grain retention, not necessarily more detail.

In other words, it's just not worth it at the moment. You can get a cheap 1080p HD tv and you'll be sweet for years to come

>BUYING TODAY SHOULD BE 4K BECAUSE WHY NOT

I think if a person is buying a very large set they don't have all that many high end options and are forced into 4k. Yet if it's looking for something in the 50ish or smaller size might as well buy cheaper 1080p

being the tech will still leap forward and the prices will keep dropping and one can just upgrade again in a few more years. Spending the money you save off buying a cheaper set now.

I guess the trade off is not watching the best of the best now. Mostly I'm shocked at how cheap tv have gotten compared to even a few years ago.
>>
Heh, since it's completely obvious /v/'s in this thread and has infiltrated /tv/ as a whole in an attempt to feel "cultured" after watching RLM or YMS, I have to ask this. Are you advocating 60-120fps in film? Do you turn on motion smoothing on your led and say "LOOK, DAD IT'S BETTER NOW"?
>>
>>62938307
Dude I have a 980ti and even Fallout 4 cannot get a steady 60 FPS at 4k res. And in busy areas it struggles to hit even 30FPS. And that's a $900 card.

The jump in resolution from even 1080 to 1440 is pretty a big strain on the GPU.

You got to keep in mind that the consoles are always behind. Christ I have a 5 year old graphics card sitting in my house that's more powerful than the current gen consoles GPU.

The visual resolution of the human eye is about 1 arc minute.

At a viewing distance of 20″, that translates to about 170 dpi (or pixels-per-inch / PPI), which equals a dot pitch of around 0.14 mm. LCD monitors today have a dot pitch of .18mm to .24mm.

A 30″ monitor with a 16:9 aspect ratio would be sized around 26″ x 15″. To achieve 170 dpi, it would need a resolution of 4400 x 2600 pixels

If you want to lean in closer, say to 10″, and still not see the pixels, then you would need to double that resolution.”
