Millennials have nothing in common with great men like Guido. How could spoiled, infantilized man children even hope to understand this film? There is literally an unbridgeable experiential gap.

People write off Godard too quickly here. Noone likes to hear this but you honestly probably actually truly do not un-der-stand him.

I first saw Contempt and Pierrot Le Fou in highschool. I didn't like either. Five years later and I finally get them. At the very least don't completely cast him aside as someone you decidedly don't like. Give him another chance sometime down the road. The man himself is an annoying pretentious fuck but he makes good movies.

That's because they are utter shit-at-canvas tier and anyone who fellates them falls under the same description I gave above in my post.

Fellini was the single most tryhard hack in Italy in the history of moving pictures. Also not all French directors were pieces of pseudo-intellectual shits during that time.
Jean-Pierre Melville, François Truffaut and Luis Buñuel, now those I can respect and appreciate. True masters of their craft unlike those nu-art school hipster edge lords.

>>
>>62924828
Kurosawa called Godard shit. Bergman called Godard a big shitdicksucking retard. Orson Welles called him a brain damaged bastard child.
Godard was a pseudo-intellectual film critic who only got into film to "show dem stoopid film makers how film is done!" and one can see this.
He made movies for the kind of broom-in-his-ass uppity tryhard faggot critics like himself for the credit's sake.

so far I've seen contempt, le petit soldat, a woman is a woman, breathless, and alphaville, which was the only film out of all of these I actually liked. considering how extensive his filmography is, I wouldn't immediately disregard him but it does seem like I'll never really appreciate his style and approach, in particular the dialogue. It just feels so meaningless half the time, both the characters and the films themselves but clearly people that seem to be more experienced in terms of film than I am don't reciprocate this view

I think there's an unfortunate tendency on this board to dismiss anyone who dismisses a revered classic. The people who immediately just start yelling pleb and contrarian at anyone who dislikes a classic are generally the people who probably don't know that much about film and are happy to embrace anything that they saw at the top of some list without being able to discuss it or realize if they actually enjoyed it. Sometimes there are classics that are shit, guys.

That being said, 8 1/2 is not one of them.

I watched Seven Samurai recently though and it has to be one of the most overrated movies I've ever seen. I have no idea how to wrap my head around the massive, heaping praise that movie receives. It's thoroughly mediocre in its zany, often dull massively unnecessary run time. It also pales significantly in comparison to movies like Ikiru and Throne of Blood. I don't think this judgment makes me a pleb, I think it makes me more willing to challenge the stale, traditional taste that some critics cling to.

Pretty pictures, beautiful cinematography. As intellectually and emotionally engaging as your average 3D card screensaver. Neither the respective directors best worth, they're literally "look, I'm a director, let me demonstrate what I can do" tier, much like such screensaver show if they're graphically up to snuff. I genuinely hate both films, and I hate the unfounded critical and academic circlejerk that has been circled from film professor to student from the days they at least hold a semblance of relevance unlike they do to day. You really know you're dealing with a pompous, stuck up his ass film snob if he names either film or their directors as their favorite, and can take their opinion with a grain of salt. Because when you're dealing with a plebian, at least he does not think he's somehow superior to you from having watched all the Clone Wars cartoons, but many of you insufferable fuckers put the most insufferable shit on pedestals, not because it's that great or cinematically relevant, but because Sight & Sound said so, or it had a Criterion release (big whoop, Armageddon is there)

Seven Samurai gets the praise because it was made in 1954 and became the foundation for so many variables in film.

Mizoguchi's Sansho the Bailiff from the same year is a better movie though, and holds up better today.

>>62925395

yeah that's what I mean. I can appreciate Samurai's historical import but after seeing it once I doubt I'll ever have even the slightest inclination to sit down with it again.

And yeah, Mizoguchi rules pretty hard. Tokyo Story came out in 1953 and it's leagues better than fucking Samurai.

>>
>>62925740

you serious mate? Kurosawa has to be one of the weakest of the entry-level arthouse directors. Ozu is so, so, so much better than him. The only Kurosawa movies that stand up to the best 6 or 7 Ozu movies are Ikiru and Throne of Blood. Late Spring and Tokyo Story are both far, far better than anything Kurosawa touched.

>>
>>62925675
No, you blockhead. Westerns are pretty much one of Hollywood's oldest genre. They predate talkies, and Hollywood really, and were a huge influence on the Samurai genre. Spaghetti westerns and the western revival of the 60s and 70s however looked at what the Japanese had pioneered in the similar genre that had reached its hight there when westerns in the west were out, the most famous example being how Sergio Leone "plagiarized" Kurosawa when he lifted plot elements straight from Yojimbo, which in turn lifted its plot almost verbatim from Dashiell Hammett's book Red Harvest. The western wasn't just an isolated genre of Hollywood and other markets looking for inspiration in foreign cinema; there was a great boom in public interest in art-house cinema in the 60s and 70s that inspired young film makers to broaden their horizons.

Im sorry but if you dont think 8 1/2 is a classic your opinion is invalid.

Its not an opinion. Its not debatable. All the people in this thread saying "its not good desu senpai" have no clue what they are talking about. I'm sorry, go watch game of thrones or breaking bad, go post in your subreddit, go masturbate to your shitty post and unwarranted sense of self importance. We wont be able to reach you.

I dont know how else to say it, saying 8 1/2 is bad is the equivalent of saying "I'm a pleb, please ignore me." I dont care how butthurt you get, its the truth.

>It's not an opinion. It's not debatable.

THIS is the issue. People here saying they don't like 8 1/2 are actually giving reasons why and we're getting some actual discussion.

Just because someone disagrees with you doesn't make them a pleb. In fact, you're the pleb for being so closed to arguments and ideas.

I'm tired of people doing nothing but name call "Pleb!" "Pleb!" Instead, have an actually discussion. Defend why you like a movie, or why you don't. Take arguments into account and either refute or concede to them. It doesn't matter what your opinion is, if you don't back it up and do nothing but name call, YOU'RE the one shitposting and ruining the board
>>
Aside from the great cinematography, I would really like to know what people found so interesting in the characters or the story to consider this one of the greatest film ever made. I may rewatch it with a new eye after, because right now I honestly think this was a overindulgent, narcissistic film about ''sad'' upper class people with very little substence.

It's amazing how fast and inarticulately you guys dismiss one director or claim other is superior. There's not even a attempt to compare the styles or overall merit of their movies it's basically tier lists structured differently.
